[Tallahassee-pm] Project for Perl Foundation proposal?

I actually had two other ideas, though I haven't fleshed them out a lot.

1) It seems in most programming that we do, we are confronted with many
different data sources and find the need to map one to the other. With XML,
we have a language to communicate between these sources; however, the actual
mapping work is often tedious and involves the need to clean data (e.g. date
formats) and do other things, such as code translations.

What I propose is a type of module that would assist programmers in mapping
data by keeping track of:

a) which elements from which data sources are similar
b) which functions are used when doing the mapping
c) field level documentation

I haven't really fleshed out this idea. I probably need to do use cases,
etc., to figure out that you still have to do the same amount of work and
another module might just add overhead.

2) Probably a more reasonable idea is to create a module that would take
Excel (and perhaps other) spreadsheets and implement functions. I've seen a
couple of attempts on CPAN, but they don't look like they work very well. I
realize this would be dealing with the "M" word, but I also think there is
an awful lot of synergy available if there was a robust, easy to use module
that would interface with Excel.

What do y'all think? I already don't like the data mapping one, since it is
so far reaching in scope and so nebulous in its goals. The Excel one,
though, would be a very manageable size and I would use it if it existed.

Ooookay, well nobody has said anything about the Perl Foundation project
proposal idea. I can only guess that either no one's got time or no
one's interested. If I'm wrong, and you _are_ interested, then please
vote for your 2 favorite ideas of those already presented.

If we get at least 2 voting members besides me, we can pick the top ones
and, if necessary, take a final vote.
