Not having used that feature, I'm not really qualified to comment.
However, I have seen more than a few smart and upstanding people I
know end up in this same situation.

I would tend to look to LinkedIn's implementation of this feature as
not giving the user the vetting controls needed to effectively
personalize these invitations.  Imagine the situation of uploading a
data file, then viewing the status message of 'your invites have been
sent to everyone in your address book'.  Using tools to save time is a
smart thing to do, but those tools don't always give you the control
you might expect.
