I think the technical differences affect the social practices.
In SVN (AFAIK), it's a nuisance to maintain multiple copies of
the source tree, merge them, etc.  So, that's not what is done.
In Git, this is so trivial that developers create new branches
for a few minutes of experimentation, then discard them.
