This is usually used to open a file, not to run a command. You could
always use the somewhat icky backtick operator to slurp the
output of ping into a variable.
>while (<PING>)
> {
> printf $_;
> }
>close(PING);
@ping = split(/\n/, `$ping $desthost`);
Perl purists, how awful is this?
