News

The next meeting is Wednesday Jan 8th 2003, this will be the first
meeting of 2003. Phil Tomson will be speaking on Ruby for Perl
  programmers

Bio: Phil Tomson

I've been programming in Ruby for about 2 years now - sometimes even
for money! (though not currently) Prior to that I did a fair amount of
Perl programming for about six years. Prior to that (about 10 years
ago) I was an ASIC (hardware) engineer.

Topic: Ruby for Perl Programmers or What's all this Ruby stuff?

You can do object oriented Perl programming and I have, but, uh, ...
how can I put this tactfully considering the audience... well, it just
kind of began to make my eyes hurt ;-) After finding Ruby a couple of
years back my eyes are feeling much better.

So "Why should I learn Ruby?" you ask? Well, it has a lot of the same
features you like about Perl - like regular expressions, strings,
arrays, hashes - but they're used in a very object oriented,
consistent manner. Ruby is different enough from Perl to so that
learning it will help you to look at programming problems in a new
light and that's always valuable. I've also found that Ruby is easy
for Perl programmers to learn - it only took me a few days to become
  comfortable with Ruby.

I'll present a quick introduction to Ruby and how it's similar to and
  yet different from Perl.
