Good call! It's been clarified on the site with a link to Wolfram 
MathWorld's description of Roman numerals.

ps: to answer your example, XIIII is not acceptable. The golf expects 
Roman numerals to be in short-hand, e.g., XIV. This is now defined on 
the page.
