I think a simple BBQ would be fun.

Why not?  (And since when was it formal?)

As long as:
    a) they don't mind hanging around with computer folks
    b) will eat the food
    c) will have fun :)

I think some volleyball or frisbee will be in order, if everyone else
is amenable.
