Perhaps you're thinking of a mail responder which we run and
mentioned over on the Central OH Linux UG list.  See:

... just send an email with an ISBN in the SUBJECT line -- all by
itself -- to:

   bookprice at owlriver.com

and the answer will magically appear, with the help of some perl
and the LWP perlmodules.

ISBN's are ten decimal digits, or nine digits with an "X" tenth
... look up ISBN's at:  http://www.owlriver.com/books.html [there
is a jump to a searchbox at the top of the page], or pull it off
the book.  Be aware that some publishers will run several ISBN's
for a single book, thru revisions.

These routines have 'aged' and rotted' as some sites play games
with their html returned ...

I have on my 'to do' list, to update this, but haven't had the
time to get to it yet.
