Given the issues with RH's Perl I'd use
one built from scratch for all of my own
work.

What I've always done is install my own
perl in /opt/perl5 and keep it up to date
with -MCPAN. That leaves the vendor's
perl in place where only their updates
touch it: neither of us can break one
another.
