Hi,

As a Chicago resident on the north side, I'd say that public 
transportation will be fine. From IIT, you can get to the red line (you 
have to cross the Dan Ryan expressway so it's a bit of a hike from the 
MTCC). There's a Belmont bus that runs pretty late if memory serves that 
can get you over to Belmont and Damon (which is 2000 w. Belmont). The 
area's pretty safe; I've been to Beat Kitchen once but it was a very 
long time ago.

Oh, and the maps on the CTA's website are very helpful; there's a trip 
planner than can help you calculate times etc.
