PDF is a display format, not a printing format. Like
HTML it is intended to be device independent. You can
control the font metrics, DPI, and paper size used for
ps output in order to standardize the appearance on paper.
The PS language is defined in terms of dots, so setting
the appropriate scale should go a long way towards standardizing
the output appearance.

Q: Do all of the sites use identical pdf -> ps conversion
   utilities?
