If you are a student and interested in Open Source, now is the time to 
act to get involved in Google's wonderful Summer of Code program.

Each year, Google offers students the opportunity to spend their summer 
vacation coding rather than flipping burgers.  You propose a project, 
and if selected, you're assigned a mentor and provided with a stipend.  
It is a competitive program to get into, but offers an amazing amount 
of real-world experience and the ability to get seriously involved in 
an open source project of your choosing.  The Perl Foundation spans a 
wide variety of projects including Perl 5, Perl 6, and Parrot with many 
great mentors signed-up to help you succeed.

And the deadline is fast approaching (noon (PDT) on Friday!)

Hi, everyone. Please forward this to your pm groups.


YAPC::EU::2009, the 10th edition of the largest European Perl conference, will
be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from the 3rd to the 5th of August, 2009.

This is the official Call for Presentations and here are the important
deadlines:

 - Deadline for talk proposals: April 30th 2009
 - Speaker notification: May 7th 2009

This year's theme for the conference is Corporate Perl.

Here's what we're looking for:

 - We're looking for talks on how corporate companies use Perl and why;

 - We're looking for talks to fit our beginner's track (if you want to submit
one and don't know what about, reach us at organizers at yapceurope2009.org and
we'll share with you our preliminary draft of an expected beginner's track);

 - And, as usual, there is also enough room for talks that don't fit any of
those groups, so we'll be looking for and expecting dozens of proposal on
everything that is Perl related.

We'll be offering two kinds of time-slots for talks:

 - 20 minutes

 - 40 minutes

If you really need a different time-slot, get in touch with us and we'll see
what we can do.

Speakers may submit multiple talks. All speakers will have their registration
fee waived.

Die sind sp?t dran. F?r Anfang August bin ich schon ?berbucht. Zwei
Wochen vorher w?re ich ja noch da unten (DebConf 9 in Extremadura,
Spanien), aber um die Zeit bin ich wohl schon in Holland.

Please could you pass this email on to your PM group if you think it
would be of interest to them.

The Send-a-Newbie project is raising money for young Perl programmers
to attend YAPC::Europe this year in Lisbon, Portugal.

So far they've raised 965 Euros - which will be enough to send at
least two people. However there are 21 applicants for funding so more
donations are needed.

If you're able to donate please do so. By getting people into the
community earlier they'll contribute more and we'll all benefit. It'll
also demonstrate to the outside world that the Perl community is
alive, vibrant and supportive (we all know this of course).

Please also help by spreading the word. You can do this by adding a
link in your email signature, blogging and so on. Especially useful
would be to forward this email to internal mailing lists to reach
people who might not read the main lists. The more people we reach the
more we can help.
