I'm attaching the "Call for Arrival Dinner Organizers" post I made to this list on May 26 (probably before you signed up for the list). It has information about how this event was organized in the past. Since we're so close to arrivals day, we might perhaps dispense with my recommendation to negotiate a prix fixe buffet with a restaurant, and instead simply make a reservation for 10 and have people order a la carte. If by, say, Saturday, we have more than 10 people signed up, we can simply ask for more tables. If, for example, you were willing to make a couple of phone calls to restaurants to get the ball rolling, then post on the wiki page above, that would get the ball rolling. (You or anyone else interested can contact me off list for further hints.) Thank you very much. Jim Keenan -------------- next part -------------- For many years attendees at TPC (f.k.a. YAPC::NA) have organized an Arrivals Dinner on the evening preceding the first official day of the conference. I've helped organized the dinner a couple of times, including last year in Alexandria, Virginia. I'm unable to play that role this year, so ... This is a call for volunteers to organize an Arrivals Dinner in Salt Lake City on Sunday, June 17, 2018. This is not really difficult, particularly if two or three people share the work. Here's what has to be done. 1. Secure venue. 2. Secure attendance. Okay, you need details. 1. Venue We need a restaurant with bar capable of seating an influx of 10 to 40 people at, say, 6:30 pm on Sunday June 17. For the record, this day is Father's Day; some venues may decline because of that. The best way for a restaurant to accommodate us is to prepare a limited-selection, fixed-price buffet and have a cash bar. Two or three meat-based dishes and one vegetarian-friendly dish should be sufficient, as the vegans amongst us typically organize their own Alt-Arrivals Dinner. Attendees should pay for their dinner as they go through the buffet line; that takes into account that people may straggle in between 6:30 and 8:00 and relieves attendees from the burden of collecting cash for a table. Restaurant should provide, say, soda or ice tea, but all booze should be individual purchase at the bar. IIRC, we had a final count of about 26 people at last year's arrivals dinner. Since YAPC::NA::2015 was held at the same venue in Salt Lake City, the easiest way to organize would be to see if we can go to the same restaurant we used that year. I don't recall its name, but the SLC organizers probably can provide that. It was about a mile east of the Little America hotel, so some people walked and some people car-caravaned. 2. Attendance The point of the Arrivals Dinner is to welcome people to the conference in a way that enables them to relax after travel and to feel welcomed by the Perl community. Promoting the dinner on this mailing list, on the wiki, on the IRC channel (irc.perl.org #yapc) are all important. The organizers should create a wiki page and encourage people to sign up on the wiki. Providing the venue with updates on the number of attendees is crucial, as it reassures the venue that it will be worth their while to, say, prepare a buffet menu and allocate a certain number of tables to the conference. In past years, the Conference has held pre-registration at the venue on the Sunday afternoon preceding the conference. In addition, there are likely to be classes going on at the venue that afternoon. So there will be a lot of Perl people hanging out at the Little America by late Sunday afternoon, thinking more and more about food and beer. That's your/our audience! You want to mobilize people to depart for the venue at 6:00 pm (assuming a 6:30 pm arrival time at restaurant). I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about organizing the Arrivals Dinner. TPC volunteers, please step forward! Thank you very much. In my experience usually standing and announcing "I'm going to X, anyone want to go with?" works pretty well. The key is having a consistent destination in mind and being somewhat vocal about it. If a group includes Larry it's probably going to be bigger just because of star power, but 12-15 is pretty reasonable. The destinations were all within 3-4 blocks of Little America, and all to the north. I think I was at Red Rock and maybe the Copper Onion when I was there last. Both had decent food (maybe with a nod to the Copper Onion) but I was with private parties both times, and ISTR a delay at Copper Onion but I might be misremembering. I said 10-20 and that was pretty vague to them, so I said I would let them know when I got a more solid count. I also asked them about special instructions for people from other countries or out of state, since this place is required to card everyone by Utah law. Everyone will need either a US drivers license or a foreign passport. They iterated even Canadians would need to have a passport and not just their drivers license. This place does have a full bar so we can order drinks while waiting for tables if necessary. It sounds like the Bayou may work for us with a little bit of flexibility for a party up to about 20 in size. Should I go ahead and just start updating the wiki and asking for a head count for the Bayou? If we get over 20 people to sign up, I can try to call up some other places too such as Charlie Chows. Hello YAPC attendees, I wanted to point you at two events I'm organizing for the conference. As I have for many years, I'm organizing a Sunday night Alt Arrival dinner (though it may be the only arrival dinner). See https://github.com/perlconference/tpc-2018-slc/wiki/Alt-Arrival-Dinner for details and to sign up. I'm also organizing an outing to a climbing gym on Tuesday night. Anyone can come, even if you've never gone climbing before. The gym has auto-belays, which means that anyone can climb solo without someone to hold the rope. Climbing is a lot of fun and it's great exercise too. You'll work muscles you didn't even realize you had. Sign up at https://github.com/perlconference/tpc-2018-slc/wiki/Climbing-Gym-BOF. My plan is to leave from the lobby at 7:30pm on Tuesday night and stay for a couple hours. If you're planning to come, I encourage you to sign the waiver linked from the wiki page in advance to save some time at the gym. A friend of one of the actors was in line with us, and called the actor, who said the show was cancelled at the last minute. No explanation given by phone, but I know it must have been a true crisis to prevent a performance. I intend to contact the box office tomorrow, and if normality has been restored, lead an group to try again on Friday (after the hackathon and tutorials) at 7:30pm. Disappointing, but we were all in good company en route, and the press from when they did it in 2013 ( https://frontrowreviewersutah.com/?p=7867 ) indicates that it is worth a second attempt. ? First you are complaining in http://thenceforward.net/perl/yapc/TPC-NA-2018/test-against-dev.pdf that > Lacking a temporal sense of the scope of any such breakage limits us in several ways: > ? It limits Perl 5 committers? ability to anticipate CPAN "breakage?. > ? It limits Perl 5 Porters? ability to hold committers accountable for CPAN ?breakage" It would be great if there would be any sort of accountability on any porter. That?s my complaint. There?s none, and if you complain about constant breakage and inability and unwillingness to hold them accountable or to fix the breakage they cause, there?s censorship. You are silenced on trumped up charges. Porters constantly break perl and cpan. BBC is a great effort, but accountability is more important. There?s none. One of the worst offenders even is now getting paid to destroy the perl and cpan infrastructure and your jobs. Without any accountability or discussion. That's why cperl has to exist. To remove the breakage the unaccountable porters cause. It starts with the head who silences accountability. Please help perl porters getting accountable. Second, you now increased the top 1000 to the top 3000 cpan coverage. You should now that I?m testing against the top 3000 cpan modules for years already (since 5.21), and my distroprefs patchset vastly outnumbered Andy K?nig?s patchsets, who is usually doing the BBC. An almost full CPAN test is also possible, with a coverage of about 20.000. I did that at cPanel and Steffen M?ller at Booking did that. Currently I have 299 unfixed outstanding cpan patches (against about 2000 outstanding and unfixed perl5 patches). There?s more accountability and willingness to fix things on CPAN than in p5p, but still the numbers are discouraging. And the ones who are not able or willing to maintain their CPAN modules are the ones who get promoted to destroy perl5 itself by getting commit bits. So far to accountability. It?s a bit strange, isn't it?
