As we go into the home stretch before YAPC::NA_2012, our team will give a wealth of infrastructure to the next YAPC::NA organizers, whomever they may be. To them we leave behind: * A standard domain:? yapcna.org. It is short, easy to remember, and specific to our conference. * A? Facebook_Page? with >100 built-in followers. * A Twitter_account with >100 built-in followers. * An RSS_feed with >100 built-in subscribers. * blog.yapcna.org, which is not only full of content, but which has been integrated into blogs.perl.org, the YAPC mailing list, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, RSS, email subscriptions, and Ironman Perl. * www.yapcna.org, (hosted by Plain_Black) which is full of great content that can be used as a starting point year after year.? As time goes on, this site will be something that the Perl community just knows and can point to. And its page rank in search engines will continue to soar as more and more sites link to it over the years. * A Google Apps account complete with GMail, Google Docs, and Google Analytics. * A spreadsheet of over 150 potential donors for YAPC::NA, and what their historical response to sponsoring YAPC has been since 2009. * A project plan containing a list of everything that needs to be checked off in order to ensure a successful conference. * A budget to work from with line-item details for every single expense and revenue of YAPC::NA 2012. * All the historical documentation that we were able to gather from the organizers of YAPC::NA 2009 through 2012. We hope this is the start of a tradition. Our team hopes that each year YAPC organizers hand down a set of tools and technologies that is greater than those left to them.? Wed also like to start one more tradition. We set all kinds of records this year: we sold more tickets than any previous YAPC::NA (though we have a long way to go to beat YAPC::Asia); we sold out of both workshops and the hackathon; we raised a lot of money from our_amazing_sponsors; and we made important changes to the structure and execution of YAPC that we hope will set a good path for YAPC for years to come. So the tradition wed like to start this year, is for every YAPC to out promote, out fund raise, and out sell every YAPC that comes before it. We hope that the tools weve left behind will not only make this possible, but easier, for those who come after us; just as the data and advice we received from previous YAPC organizers gave us a good starting point. We wish the applicants for YAPC::NA 2013 the best of luck with their bid and their conference.? [From the YAPC::NA_Blog.] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We think were leaving a strong legacy: * First and foremost, we hope we deliver a spectacular conference that attendees remember fondly for years to come. * Were leaving behind a wealth of infrastructure for the next YAPC organizers. * We should be creating a_new_generation_of_Perl_developers through our training programs before, during, and after the conference. * When the final totals are tallied, we should be able to give a good sized sum of money to The Perl Foundation to be earmarked for the Perl_5_Core Maintenance_Fund? and CPAN_Testers. * Well leave behind nearly 100 hours of video presentations that will be professionally captured by our streaming team. * And finally, we hope each new team of organizers will set a new standard for what a YAPC can look like. We believe we have achieved that goal, and we hope that every organizer that comes after us amazes us with their achievements as well. Heres a list of things that you might want to bring with you to YAPC: * Games - cPanel is sponsoring a game night at YAPC, so whether you want to play some cards, board games, role-playing games, or LAN games, youll need to bring your favorite games with you.? * Geek Shirts - Theres no better time to show off your geektitude than at a conference. Pack your absolute best/coolest geek t-shirts for YAPC. * Power Cable - Dont forget to bring a way to recharge your devices. And if you happen to be from a country other than the United States, be sure to bring a power adapter to convert our power to yours. * VGA Adapter - You never know when you might want to do an impromptu talk. All the projectors at YAPC operate at 1024x768 and use a VGA input. Speakers, this is especially important for you! * USB Stick - While WiFi will be ubiquitous at YAPC, few things work better than sneaker net.? * Business Cards - Yes theyre a bit old-fashioned, but they still work great. If you have them, bring them. You never know when you might want to hand one out. * Travel Arrangements - Make sure you keep a paper copy, or downloaded copy of your hotel, parking, airline, train, or bus tickets and itinerary with you just in case. * Grooming Supplies - There are few things worse than body odor in a room full of 400 people. Keep it clean! * Government Issued ID - Most places will check your ID before letting you order a drink. * Cash - Bring a small amount of US Currency or at least a card to get it from an ATM. Most places take credit cards, but not all. Plus youll need cash to buy raffle tickets! * Camera - If you dont take pictures, then it never happened. If youve got a camera or a camera phone bring it! And when you upload those photos to the net, tag them with #yapcna2012 There are also a couple of things you can leave behind: * Your Badge Receipt - Dont worry about bringing a printout of your badge purchase. We have those records and your badge will be waiting for you at the YAPC registration desk in the Lowell Center (610 Langdon St).? * Bad Attitude - We want everyone to have a good time, and were working hard to provide an open_and_respectful_environment. If youve got a chip on your shoulder, leave it at home. To a lot of you this stuff will be old hat, but weve also got a lot of people coming this year that have never been to a conference, so it never hurts to have a refresher.? MediaMath is a confluence of media, technology and massive amounts of data. There is a transformation of an industry underway and MediaMath is at the cutting edge. Our engineers develop very complex, innovative, and highly scalable technology to change how advertising is bought, sold, and traded. Their breakthroughs create new market places, solve long-standing problems, and push new technology every day. It?s a very exciting company in a very exciting industry. Our platform handles billions of transactions per hour and we reach hundreds of millions of Internet and mobile users worldwide?and we?re not done yet! The platform and tools we develop are built to scale because this revolution has just begun. Our team of industry pioneers continually enhances our industry-leading platform that leverages our algorithmic media buying technology, enabling media buyers to buy ad space and manage their media campaigns. Great, but what does that mean for you as an engineer? It means opportunities to work on improving our algorithmicbuying platform (known as ?The Brain?), working on super fast systems, and integrate multiple partners via our APIs. Yet, many smart developers make it more difficult than it needs to be by choosing tools and frameworks that do not fully take advantage of all that HTTP has to offer. This talk demonstrates how projects at all levels from the simplest brochureware site to the most advanced Hypermedia APIscan be made simpler by getting back to the basics of HTTP. We introduce Tamarous internal application development and publishing framework, Magpie (scheduled for public release to coincide with YAPC::NA) and step through a series of real-world examples to show how its resource-oriented approach to development keeps simple things simple and makes hard things easier.? Topics include: * Why MVC is the wrong way to think about Web development. * Why most frameworks that claim to be RESTful arent (and how that makes life harder) * An brief introduction to Resource-oriented development. * A series of production-tested Magpie recipes covering the gamut of Web-dev from simple templated sites through advanced Hypermedia applications. However, you may not know why it is called the Badger State. Believe it or not, we have very few badgers in the state. Wisconsin is called the Badger State because in the early days mining was the largest industry here, and the miners were called ???badgers??? because they burrowed into the ground like their animal namesake. In the harsh Wisconsin winters the miners would actually live in the mines to escape the cold. When the miners went to work, they brought with them a type of food called a cornish pasty, because it would stay hot in their lunch pail until they were ready to eat. A pasty is basically a small loaf of bread stuffed with meat and vegetables.? Why am I telling you this? Because you can still try out a pasty not far from the YAPC::NA_2012 campus. About 7 blocks from the campus you can have a Teddywedger, which is the modern form of the old-style cornish pasty. In the morning you can get them filled with eggs and cheese, or eggs and vegetables. In the afternoon and evening you can get them filled with the traditional meat and potatoes, or you can go with non-traditional fillings like chicken-pot-pie, pizza, steak and onions, and more.? The list of items doesn't espouse the same puritanical fear of the language that I've come to loathe about PBP and PC. These seem to be largely reasonable without any of the silly suggestions (like using Class::Std or banning unless or banning statement modifiers or cargo culting regex modifiers even when they're irrelevant or ...) that are in PBP. -- Chris Nehren | Coder, Sysadmin, Masochist Shadowcat Systems Ltd. | http://shadowcat.co.uk/ -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I don't know of anyone here being directly involved. However, at Perl Oasis 2012, Casey West presented a talk on a related theme: http://www.perloasis.info/opw2012/talk/3905 Perl::Critic for Security Audits It's still common to have mission critical Perl CGI scripts from 2001 in production, like it or not. Often they're frozen and not kept up to date. They keep doing the job, and there's a lot of merit to that. But what about security concerns? Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and Database SQL Injection attacks are all too common ways for attackers to exploit vulnerabilities in your software. If you have thousands of lines of legacy code to go through, give these techniques a try to find and fix potential security holes. This talk will walk you through the implementation of two Perl::Critic policies designed to analyze and detect potential security vulnerabilities. Static analysis can help you determine the scope of work involved in closing security holes in your code, and err on the side of false positives. You will learn some advanced techniques for using PPI to analyze your code, and Perl::Critic to easily generate reports for estimation and analysis by your team. At the end of the talk these security oriented policies will be uploaded to CPAN for your general use, and you will understand enough of how they're built to adapt them to your own internal frameworks and interfaces. -- Hope this helps, Bruce Gray (Util of PerlMonks) From shild at sbcglobal.net Mon Jun 11 18:38:31 2012 From: shild at sbcglobal.net (Scott Hildreth) Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2012 18:38:31 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [yapc] Which route is Faster or Better Message-ID: <1339465111.16732.YahooMailRC@web184411.mail.bf1.yahoo.com> Does anyone know if it is "more better" to exit at 12-18 west to 151 North or take 90 to WI-30 West to 151 South (Google Map's Directions)? Go to WI-30 -- 151 (East Washington Ave) is under construction for the couple miles from the exit off the interstate. If the traffic isn't bad, it won't matter too much, but if the traffic is bad, the construction would be a real pain. Even without the construction it is often easier and quicker to go around on 30, due to traffic around East Towne mall and the businesses along 151 as you come in. Just watch the exit from 30 to 151/E Washington, it kinda sneaks up on you and is a hard right turn (it's just past the Fair Oaks exit after you go under the bridge). Never fear if you miss it, just stay on 30 to Packers Ave, which (when taken South -- left) winds a bit at first (and changes names a couple times), but comes right down to the University (becoming University Ave). Any time that isn't winter is construction season around here, and several major roads are under construction. If you're coming from the South (via 12/18), Fish Hatchery Rd is completely closed, take Park St (likely what map software would give you anyway). Coming from the West, University Ave is under heavy construction (1 lane each way with few turn lanes), if you're unfamiliar, probably best to take 12/18 around to Park St (12/18 is under construction part of that way, but it's less harrowing, especially in the dark). City of Madison construction info (no map -- did we lose a war??): http://www.cityofmadison.com/transportation/roadworks/ State of Wisconsin construction info (useless map): http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/road/workzones.htm (Seems like the City and State info are begging to be hacked together in to a useful map of some sort..) jon PS, right at the moment, Google is suggesting taking the exit to 51 (which intersects with 151) when you're coming down from the North, which is surprising to me, but would also avoid the construction on 151 (in exchange for construction at the interchange.) Well, when I clicked it it was still driving directions, and I was feeling silly. Good point on the goto. Then again, sometimes there are situations where goto really is the best and simplest solution, despite it's being considered harmful. I'd be hard pressed to code around it without getting overly complicated. I did resist the urge to paraphrase Firesign Theater and make a "ouch my nose!" style joke about hitting the Capitol. In order to make sure you dont miss out - and to find out if somebody has found the power cable you accidentally left in the lobby - its worth keeping in touch. To do that, there are two key resources - ? 1) The mailing list: ? ? ? ? http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/yapc ? 2) The IRC channel: ? ? ? ? #yapc on? irc.perl.org? (which allows? mibbit.com? if you have no client) The mailing list tends to be used for hey, does anybody fancy doing X later? ideas, and the IRC channel for hey, does anybody fancy doing X right now? but thats more down to the technology than any enforcement. These will help you get the most out of your YAPC - and to find the people involved in? http://act.yapcna.org/2012/wiki?node=HallwayPlusPlus if youre wanting to met new people while youre here too! Im setting up a decidedly low tech way to give newcomers special access to Perl celebrities without the risk that their conversation will be hijacked by all the other conference attendees who already know that person. So far, Ive convinced Sinan ??n??r, Randal Schwartz (merlyn), Ricardo Signes (rjbs), Karen Pauley, and Dave Rolsky to participate. If youd like to be one of the Celebrities for these lunches, add your name to posterboard. There will be a posterboard in the conference registration area starting Wednesday morning. For each day, there will be some slots where someone with the Celebritys name and a meeting time (and maybe a food preference). Four people can put their name under the slot theyd like to attend (and maybe well add a waiting list). Meet back at the posterboard at the chosen time and go to lunch at a place your group chooses. That group gets an exclusive lunch and conversation with the Perl Celebrity. Although Im not requiring that the group cover the lunch tab, it might be a nice gesture. My only rule is that you should not have ever interacted with that person, online, offline, IRL, or in any other way. Cycling would be awesome, but I have no experience in cycling on the right hand side of the road and I'm concerned that I'll turn left or right onto the wrong side of the rode and into on coming traffic. If you're likely to be going for a supply run, or are willing to go for a drive, or are willing to cycle with me, that would be fabulous. I originally purchased a ticket for flight 5020, but the airline had rescheduled me to 5022 over a month ago. Perhaps they changed the flight that you were on to this 5022?
