However, we have two areas we???re definitely interested in: First, we???re looking for talks on Perl in the Wild. These talks are about businesses and individuals who have done great things with Perl. Perhaps you???ve automated your house with Perl, or built the latest and greatest web app. Or maybe you???re controlling Arduino boards to build robots with Perl. Maybe you???ve got amazing case studies in high-end performance with Perl. Or maybe, you???ve built a boring little app in Perl that has enabled your business to make millions of dollars. You could be building a great video game in Perl, or perhaps a social network to take down Facebook and Twitter. ? Whatever it is that you???ve built or are building, we_want_to_hear_about_it. Second, we???re looking for the quintessential Perl 101 talks. We???re putting together a_program_to_train_the_next_generation_of_Perlers, and we need your help. Assume they will have a basic understanding of Perl syntax, but nothing else. So you can show them how to best get something in and out of a database. Or you could show them how build a simple web app, ? munge a log file, or write an IRC bot. Maybe you want to show them all the cool things you can do with tied variables, or why they should choose Moose, Mouse, Moo, or Mo. Someone really should show them how to handle exceptions, write to a log, and do performance profiling. No matter whether you???ve been coding Perl for 3 months or 3 years, you???ve got something to share with the Perl newbies of the world. You're assuming that I'm invoking NIH, and I'm not sure why. However, I'll try to explain better what we're trying to do, and maybe from there we can get to the same page. 1) We haven't ruled out those talks in the least. I simply was unaware that all those talks were generated by you and therefore you have the raw slides of all of them. 2) We can't assume that the people who were there last year will be here again this year to do those talks. 3) We can't assume that the people coming would be willing to take over those talks. 4) There aren't enough talks in that list. Our beginners program will, ideally, last all three days of YAPC. 5) Several of the topics covered in those talks, are being covered by our Zero To Perl Workshop. Suggestions are always welcome. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My knee jerk reaction was more about the ambiguity of qr codes - you can put whatever you want on them. If there is agreement as to what will be put on them - a vcard, or a url to the contact page *which I can control*, that's good. However, if the point is to provide the sponsors with contact information so they can email me after the fact, without my permission, because anyone can take a camera and have contact information for anyone in the photo, is what I was wondering about. I agree that using QR codes or other similar mechanism, for people that *want* to share information is a great mechanism at a conference. Otherwise, allow people to opt out as they see fit. There's a fair amount of redundancy in the code... when you see a code with an icon or image in the middle, it's because they're taking advantage of that redundancy and error correction... so depending on the size of the QR selected to hold the info, might take quite a few pixel changes. -- Randal L. Level M 15% of codewords can be restored. Level Q 25% of codewords can be restored. Level H 30% of codewords can be restored. Probably better to just hit it all. -- Chas. So if you are going to *need* to have a QR code reading capable mobile device to experience the conference to it's fullest, then some people (myself included) are going to miss out. I don't really care if you use them or not, just make sure that luddites like myself can still access everything we need to be able to access, even if it requires some extra key strokes. Such as this one. So I think it is great that JT is using these networks to promote YAPC::NA. It is even better that starting from this year, these social accounts are not for the specific year only, so they won't, sort-of "expire". Sharing them with other people and inviting them to follow those pages will earn you their hatred for years. In addition, I think we can use the same social networks to mention the local Perl Workshops as well - they are not really off-topic there - which will really freak-out some people. So in case you would like to help the organizers of YAPC::NA a bit, share and recommend it on your least hated social network. BTW do you like meaningless statistics? We?ll give priority to talks that fit with the Beginner Track or Perl in the Wild Track. We?ll be approving a handful of talks every week. This doesn?t mean that if your talk isn?t approved right away, it won?t be. However, the sooner you get your talk proposals in, the better chance you have of getting a talk approved and placed on the schedule. Our deadline for proposals is March 15, 2012. I bought an Arduino a year ago and Martin Berends helped me get started with it programming it in it C-like language but quickly got stuck for two main reasons 1) lack of time 2) 0, or even negative understanding in electronics - all the physical part of it Since then I accumulated a lot of junk - in preparation to the time when I need various physical devices to hook up to my Arduino but that time is still on its way. I don't think you can help with (1) well, unless you help me get lot of people buy my training classes :) (and thank *you* for buying it) but (2) might be something interesting and fun even if I don't see how is it useful. It might be more fun to program my Arduino in Perl but I don't mind playing with the C code. The thing I would really need help with is understanding the electronics part. Oh and an idea. I'd love to see some robot competition at YAPCs. Sorry if this wasn't much help. regards Gabor From admin at yapcna.org Fri Jan 13 01:00:02 2012 From: admin at yapcna.org (YAPC::NA Director) Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2012 04:00:02 -0500 Subject: [yapc] Five Months To Go Message-ID: <20120113010003.D4AFBAD4@dm0220.mta.everyone.net> I hope you???re enjoying your New Year so far. The apostrophe used was the typographically correct apostrophe for English text. It has a bad reputation because if its frequent use in Microsoft Word as "smart quotes" using the Windows-1252 encoding, and the traditional lack of support for this encoding in the non-Microsoft world as well as the misuse of it when copying and pasting. However, the email sent was encoded as UTF-8, as specified in the source. Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Any email client with Unicode support should understand the RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK (U+2019) and the associated glyph is available in most fonts. The Unicode Standard even states in the definition of the ASCII-compatible APOSTROPHE (U+0027) that "U+2019 is preferred for apostrophe" as well as that "preferred characters in English for paired quotation marks are U+2018 & U+2019." By the way, as seen in this message, I personally keep my email typography simple and stick with ASCII punctuation, but prefer to use proper punctuation in documents. -- Nick Patch http://nickpatch.net From jkeen at verizon.net Mon Jan 23 18:29:21 2012 From: jkeen at verizon.net (James E Keenan) Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2012 21:29:21 -0500 Subject: [yapc] Schedule and Wiki Now Open In-Reply-To: References: <20120122010004.D87038BB@dm0227.mta.everyone.net> <20120123170335.21397747.lembark@wrkhors.com> <20120123231137.GI630@isuckatdomains.members.linode.com> <20120123231935.GL19118@agaton.scsys.co.uk> Message-ID: <4F1E1781.7040704@verizon.net> On 1/23/12 7:20 PM, Nick Patch wrote: > On Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 6:19 PM, Matt S Trout > wrote: >>>> I'd suggest turning off smart quoting for email >>>> that may be read by anything other than MS Word. >>> >>> It displays sanely for me in Apple Mail.app and in mutt. Is it just a random collection of mutations, as desperate Perl hackers struggle to remain fit enough to survive, or is there an intelligent design behind the way Perl is changing? And running games is a *lot* of work. What?s a lazy GM to do? Solve the problem in as generic a way as possible, of course! I?ll give the computer some data and some instructions about how to do the tedious stuff (managing initiatives, monster health, combatant status, that sort of thing). No Web servers or browsers needed?I want this to run offline and not kill my laptop?s battery.
