I'm still heartbroken that I can't see Audrey's amazing lighting talk where she went on a crazy fast and hilarious slide show journey through technology as it relates to perl. Anyways, whats the plan for this year's YAPC::NA 2010? Will the talks be recorded? If so, is there any plan to make them available to the public to watch after the conference? The Blackwell is renowned for treating its celebrity guests with class and I am looking forward to my stay. I am just like David Spade. Everyone says so. My resemblance to Mr. Spade has changed my life. In hotels people are always asking me for autographs and stories of my friend Chris Farley. As you can imagine it is very emotional for me. I have a few requests so I can stay at your fine hotel. I will need to enter your hotel from a side or back door. When I walk through the lobby a large crowd forms around me and I'm unable to reach the customer service desk. If I can't enter through an alternate door you can also create a VIP area in the lobby for me to walk through. Mr. Spade's fans understand this convention and will not disrupt your reputable establishment. Your staff must only speak to me by written notes. My voice is the spitting image of Mr. Spade's. When I speak children and mothers squeal and call me "Kuzco!" The danger is heightened during my stay due to all the grown men attending the Llama Convention. Please be circumspect in this regard. I do not want to be shaved again. Thank you in advance for your understanding. I selected your well regarded, four-star facility because of your understanding of the troubles of celebrity look-a-likes such as me. I do not have a mullet. Can we just tell people our names and show our IDs? The dorms have a list of people and their rooms and they are creating packets now. The conference registration we have a list of paid/not paid people. We will be doing conference checkins Sunday afternoon 2pm-4pm in the Blackwell and in the south campus dorm ( Morrison Tower ) lobby. Also YAPC checkin will start Monday morning at 7am at the Ohio Union building. Now if you miss all three of those options just stop by the hospitality room ( http://ohiounion.osu.edu/visit_the_union/building_map/second_floor ) "Ohio Staters, Inc Traditions Room". 2) Is there a wiki page for Ride Sharing? http://yapc2010.com/yn2010/wiki?node=RideShare 3) How far is the airport to campus? (just in case I need to get a shuttle etc) There is a Blackwell Inn shuttle that runs every 30-45 mins (if you are staying at that hotel). If you are staying in the dorms you can grab a taxi or call us for help. http://yapc2010.com/yn2010/wiki?node=PhoneUs We are thinking about making some runs back and forth to the airport on Sunday. Just call the YAPC Hotline: 866-667-YAPC or 614-678-5134 and someone from the YAPC::NA team can help. -- Heath Cell: (440) 289-9820 From frioux at gmail.com Tue Jun 15 11:10:41 2010 From: frioux at gmail.com (fREW Schmidt) Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 13:10:41 -0500 Subject: [yapc] Can someone switch talk times with me? There I found a 20"x20"x12" box that will accommodate all the cra, er, unique items I bought at the auction as well as the second bag I flew here with. -packy On Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 12:49 AM, Packy Anderson wrote: > Oh, I know where it IS, it's at 234 West 18th Avenue. > I just don't know if it's open. > > On Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 12:28 AM, Jon Miner wrote: > >> I would bet it's near the union, if not somewhere in it. >> >> Maybe try the info desk, if nobody has a better idea before tomorrow... >> >> jon >> >> >> On 6/23/10 12:01 AM, Packy Anderson wrote: >> >> I'd like to pack up the cra... er, wonderful things I bought at the >> auction and mail them back home so I don't have to carry them on the plane >> with me, but Google says the closest US Post Office is 2.5 miles away on >> Twin Rivers Drive. >> >> However, the OSU website says there's a post office on campus. There is also a separate mailing list for the "TPF Events group" linked from that wiki page where participants of previous events might be able to help you. I planned to leave most of the tuits here so you are welcome to pick up a bunch of them to give away on CPOSC. regards Gabor From toddr at null.net Wed Jun 23 07:12:55 2010 From: toddr at null.net (Todd Rinaldo) Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2010 10:12:55 -0400 Subject: [yapc] BOF - local perl monger meeting attendance Message-ID: houston.pm has in the past struggled to maintain attendance at monthly meetings. You can now submit your thoughts on the conference as a whole, as well as provide any feedback to both this years organisers and suggest anything for next years organisers. The talk evaluations are all still open, including all the lightning talks too. All the surveys will be open for the next 4 weeks and will close on Friday 23rd July. I aim to get feedback to speakers the following week, and hopefully the results of the conference survey too. Thanks to those who have already completed some of the talk evaluations, I know the speakers themselves will appreciate the feedback. I missed this BOF :-( Madison.pm attendance can be attributed to JT Smith's efforts in organizing meetings. Also, it doesn't hurt that he is known for paying for food and beer. :-) I was pondering the idea of creating a local $work.pm. This might not work for small development shops, but it would be especially useful for large organizations - such as a university, or a even large division of an organization - where there are disparate perl programmers that would benefit from a perl mongers group but don't think to ever attend. I haven't worked up the courage, or found a topic, to present anything at Madison.pm, but perhaps a $work.pm would help me to vet topics and practice presenting. Ideally, a $work.pm would help make people more aware of the existence and the value of the local City.pm From scott at slowass.net Fri Jun 25 12:58:38 2010 From: scott at slowass.net (Scott Walters) Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2010 15:58:38 -0400 Subject: [yapc] BOF - local perl monger meeting attendance In-Reply-To: <4C250242.5040606@gmail.com> References: <4C250242.5040606@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20100625195838.GB27260@slowass.net> Missed this BoF too. I think what you say makes sense. For clarification, my proposed $work.pm idea would be to "teach awesome Perl hackery" to the "maintenance programmers" so that they might be interested in $city.pm. Also, it would give the "people who have families to go home to" a opportunity to be part of a Mongers group while their lives are busy, and maybe make them interested in attending $city.pm when they have more time in the future. Even if $city.pm never pans out, at least it encourages more interest in Perl. On 06/25/2010 02:58 PM, Scott Walters wrote: > Missed this BoF too. We've had large groups before (30+) because we had a big name give a talk such as Conway and Schwartz. I think we've been able to keep attendance up because we're always looking for new ways to get our name out there. Here's the points that I'd recommend for any group: - Keep your home page up to date, or if not feesable, stop it from becoming out-of-date. If you find that you can't keep the "next meeting date" bit up-to-date, remove it. Its better to say "its the second Wednesday of every month" then it is to say "March 10th, 2010" months after that meeting has passed. - Make groups on social networking sites for your PM and get your mongers to join them. At TO.pm we have groups on facebook and linkedin. - Notify you social networks about meetings a few days before they happen. - Notify your PM's mailing list about meetings a few days before they happen. - Attend local conferences, even setup a Perl booth. - Network with fellow local perl mongers organizers. - Always have presenters, never cancel a meeting, even if that means you pick up the slack when nobody steps up. Lack of consistency can push away potential regulars. I've done all that and have had good results from it all. Also, our home page (http://www.thousand-oaks-perl.org/) is a meetup.com page which gives us a whole lot of cheap (not free!) exposure. Some things we've talked about doing, but haven't: - Hold Perl classes sponsored by TO.pm, proceeds going to TPF. - Get listed on local technical web sites, publications, and newspapers. HTH. At http://dc.pm.org ; we use a wiki, and a lot of members contribute. A simple re-captcha is used to verify a user is valid before we allow someone to edit content. We also have a "talk queue" rather than an explicit set talk, so that way we can have multiple talks in the queue for any given night. * Notify your PM's mailing list about meetings a few days before they happen. Agreed. I wrote a very simple perl script that runs every night, and checks to see if next Tuesday is the first Tuesday in the month, and sends out a reminder email to the list @ dc.pm.org to start talking about next week's talk ; with links to where the meeting should occur and how to unsubscribe to the mailing list. We also have an informal discussion as to possible places to meet for dinner before the meeting, on or a few days before the event, if you can leave work early... At first, all of the meetings were local to the main office, but after one or two meet-ups, the word got around and we ended up using the internal VC equipment to get together with all of our distributed teams. That was probably the most regular and well-attended PM group that I ever went to. The alphas in the company showed up because they wanted to be there and really enjoyed it. The others showed up so that they could learn from, or at least be seen by, the alphas. Overall, I think the quality of our Perl code increased considerably, as did our ability to share code across teams. I would definitely encourage $work.pm groups after that experience, not even for the sake of recruiting people to $city.pm (we didn't have one), but because it makes your workplace better. ... somewhat related, but not really ... I am in Chicago now and it is definitely a town that is set up for folks to get the f*sk out of downtown as soon as work is over. We do have $city.pm meetings, but they are somewhat irregular and attendance is unpredictable. Has anyone done a mid-day work-day $city.pm meeting? If so, did it work out?
