Oh yes I just looked at http://pycon.org/ and I saw a few things 1) There are more python events than just PyCon, so we can keep bragging about how many Perl events there are but we should not say there is only one Python conference. 2) It has prominent links to each one of the events (thought without dates) that *does not require scrolling down*. I like the improvements on yapc.org site but I think it would be better to have a short list of events visible without scrolling down. The yapceurope.org website is for the YAPC::Europe Foundation, not just for YAPC::EU conferences. This is why the website links (on the front page) to TPF, which is closer to the same scope as YEF. The 'Conferences' page (http://www.yapceurope.org/conferences.html) lists all previous YAPC::EU conferences and also links to other YAPCs. The North America site links to http://yapc.org/America which is currently redirecting to the Act website for Chicago. I'm not sure where a link to yapc.org would fit in. Perhaps it should be on the conference page, or perhaps there should be a page with 'additional perl resources' although I'm not sure I want to maintain a list of perl websites. Do you have any suggestions as to where yapceurope.org could link to yapc.org, bearing in mind the purpose of the site (which to me suggests that it does not belong on the front page)? - Ann From adam.prime at utoronto.ca Fri Jul 4 12:15:38 2008 From: adam.prime at utoronto.ca (adam.prime at utoronto.ca) Date: Fri, 04 Jul 2008 15:15:38 -0400 Subject: [yapc] yapc.org out of date In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20080704151538.mne3u3paocw8wwow@webmail.utoronto.ca> Quoting Jeff Bisbee : > I definitely agree with Gabor. The link on the conference name links to the google calender event that drives the whole thing (which probably isn't really how it should work) The script that generates that page is in the google code repository though, so i'm sure you could submit a patch to make it better and they'd love you forever. http://tpf.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/yapc/yapc_org/bin/extract_cal_events.pl As for why it's out of date, maybe a cron job isn't running? (or isn't > running enough) Being out of date is my fault. I've been away for the past two weeks and haven't updated to upcoming events. I'm doing that now and I'll update some of the other stuff as soon as I get a chance. Thanks, Jeremy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Those events don't have a way to include an event link, so the only way to get the event link is include it in the event description. We could try to parse the event description to get the link, or suggest some standards for the description text to make it easier, but I think this would be error prone. My main goal was to make this as automatic as possible (I know, I'm lazy). As far as how it should work, I'm all ears if someone wants to suggest something (and offer the time to implement the suggestion). > The script that generates that page is in the google code repository > though, so i'm sure you could submit a patch to make it better and > they'd love you forever. > > http://tpf.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/yapc/yapc_org/bin/extract_cal_events.pl Indeed we would, at least for a while. -- Jim Brandt The Perl Foundation email: cbrandt at perlfoundation.org From ann at domaintje.com Mon Jul 7 08:08:47 2008 From: ann at domaintje.com (Ann Barcomb) Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2008 17:08:47 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [yapc] yapc.org out of date In-Reply-To: <48721C1F.5090208@buffalo.edu> References: <20080704151538.mne3u3paocw8wwow@webmail.utoronto.ca> <48721C1F.5090208@buffalo.edu> Message-ID: <20080707170417.M44574@primus.biocede.com> > That's correct, the list of events is driven by The Perl Review events > calendar. Out of curiosity, how are things getting on the Google calendar in the first place? Have you considered using BooK's YAML export of Perl events which are using their instance of Act (http://www.yapceurope.org/conferences.yml) as another data source? - Ann From david at kineticode.com Wed Jul 16 23:21:31 2008 From: david at kineticode.com (David E. I took around 800 photos, I think, maybe 1000 (I threw a lot out), and settled on 265 to upload to Flickr (still too many, sorry). I went especially ape-shit at Millennium Park and the Speakers Party. Anyway, full set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/theory/sets/72157605635074844/ Everyone's Flickr-uploaded photos from the conference are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/yapcna2008/ 999 photos. Sheesh, can't someone add one more? ;-) Enjoy! David
