I'd like to request input from anyone who knows or can find out anything detailed and specific about the dorm room setup for YAPC::NA next month. Anything at all which might be of relevence to the cost-pinched comfort-loving traveller ;-). How's the food? WHERE's the food? Vending machines? Telephony? Ethernet?? ;-) And the 10-dollar question everyone has been DYING to see answered: what the ever-luvin beeblethorpe is an INDIAN RIVER ROOM? Thanks so much! Meng Wong (freeside) has been working on the YAPC::NA FAQ at http://www.yapc.org/America/faq.shtml The only one I can answer is network access. I have a signed up for a campus account that everyone will share that will give us access to wireless, computer labs, and dorm room ethernet. I don't have specifics on it yet, but FAU has a help desk that help those of us that have problems. Also, I'll dig up some links so those who are interested can read up before hand. So we have the these new questions for the FAQ: How & where is the food? Dorms & Vending machines? Dorms & Telephony? > And the 10-dollar question everyone has been DYING to see answered: what > the ever-luvin beeblethorpe is an INDIAN RIVER ROOM? I'm going to hold off on answering that question because I'm in the process of negotiations with the dorm guy. We orginally estimated 100 people staying in the dorms and signed a contract with that amount. Currently only 18 of the 152 attendees are signed up for the dorms so I'm working with the dorm guy to "ignore" the previous contract (so we don't have to pay for 100 rooms). I should get my answers today and I'll e-mail only those who are staying in the dorms. -- Jeff Bisbee / yapc@jbisbee.com / jbisbee.com From pdcawley at bofh.org.uk Thu May 29 06:24:09 2003 From: pdcawley at bofh.org.uk (Piers Cawley) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:39:36 2004 Subject: [yapc] Campus Dorm Accomodations: Howzey? This year the closest major league baseball games (http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/fla/schedule/fla_schedule_calendar.jsp?m=6&y=2003) are the Florida Marlins hosting the New York Mets at 7:05pm each night Monday - Thursday. Then Tampa Bay arrives on Friday. But closer to the conference, and not to be found in most places, is Jai Alai with the fastest ball in all of sports, clocking in at up to 180 mph. Near the Ft. Lauderdale airport is the Dania Jai Alai Fronton (http://www.dania-jai-alai.com/). And Wednesday is 99 cent night. So this year it may be changed to: Jai Alai BOF Wednesday Games start at 7:15 but we can arrive earlier - Geoff PS. I will arrive PHL->FLL on Sunday at 1:51pm and leave Friday at 5:55pm if anyone wants a ride to the dorms at about these times. It is a great supermarket where everything is either high-quality or organic, though a little more expensive than most normal supermarkets. There is also a chinese resteraunt in that same plaza called PE Chang's that I highly recommend. There is also a decent american-style resteraunt called J Alexanders and a French bistro-type place in that same plaza. > > > What sort of restaurants are the within walking distance? > > I'm interested in something better than a burger. > > I'd love to know specifically about vegan-friendly > restaurants in the area. Its name escapes me but it is located on the west side of 2nd Ave between Glades Road and 20th Street. On the corner of 20th Street and 2nd Ave is Jerry's Pizza. Also in that area is Tom Sawyers which serves outstanding breakfast. This are is also within walking distance (maybe 10 minute walk). ~Dave Greco From pk-sofla-pm at kailasa.net Fri May 30 12:41:51 2003 From: pk-sofla-pm at kailasa.net (Prakash Kailasa) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:39:37 2004 Subject: [yapc] The campus vacinity ? There are all kinds of restaurants within 5-mile radius of the campus, but very few of them would be within walking distance. There's a chinese bistro in the same plaza as the Whole Foods Market. There's another restaurant (Alexander's?) there too, but I don't know what type it is. There are two indian restaurants and an indian fast food place (this one is within walking distance from the campus) in the area. There are 2 really good Indian places that I frequent. One has a lunch buffett (they are closed Mondays). We also have some Thai, Japanese, Chinese and other places nearby. This site may help you a bit: http://www.mycity.com/geo/usa/states/florida/metros/boca_raton/cities/boca_raton/home/ I'd be up for Indian food one of the nights! :-) Cheers, Kevin -- [Writing CGI Applications with Perl - http://perlcgi-book.com] "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You can walk there. Glades Road which separates FAU from the plaza is a busy road but it is one of the safest places in the state. The one on Glades Road and US 441 (SR 7), Taisho is all-you-can-eat and pretty good. There is another place, called the Kyojin buffet. It's a bit more expensive, but they have more variety for non-Sushi eaters as well.
