Hi Chicago PMers,

My lightning talk was just approved and I don't have anything
prepared, so I was wondering whether any Perl guys would mind
spending a little bit of their time this weekend being an
interviewer in a filmed interview about the subject of the talk,
the FRDCSA (http://frdcsa.org) ?  The location in
flexible (Chicagoland), but it will be lit and shot to a
professional standard by a film student.  I will be in business
casual.

Look again, it says right up there ^^^ that there's one going on RIGHT  
NOW :)

Also, there's likely to be one Thursday and Friday and possibly into  
the weekend, as long as

Damian Conway is going to be in Toronto on July 16th.  Right now
airline ticket prices are in the $450 range, which sucks, but it's
only an eight hour drive.  If three more people want to go and will
split the gas bill, then I'll investigate couching in Toronto and see
if we can make it a trip by car.  I think that you have to have a
passport to get to Canada now, so if you don't have one, you are
probably out of luck.

Hi guys,

This sounds excellent.  I'd love to go but I know my own schedule will not
permit it.

I wanted to let you know you can get a passport expedited and over nighted.
Also there is a passport office in Chicago.  I think if you go to the
passport office and check it out, for an additional $100 you can get your
passport in three weeks which is enough time.  Alternatively, they will let
you get one processed in person basically right away, but then they want
proof that you are going.  Typically, proof is an airplane ticket, so I
don't know how that works when you are driving.

Check out the government's web page for passports (google it ;-) ).  The US
government has a new passport program with the Canadian government.  You can
get a "passport card".  I think you can request a passport card and it will
come much faster.  Also, a passport card is much less expensive than a
passport book.  The passport card is an ID card that is equivalent to a US
passport for traveling to and from the US and Canada, however, it is only
good on ground transport (on foot, by car, or on a train), it can not be
used to fly to and from Canada.  Anyway if you want to go on this trip and
are going to drive, then check out getting a US Passport card which is
cheaper and maybe faster.  Alternatively there is still time to get your US
passport book, it can be expedited and over nighted for an extra $100, or
you can get it in person in Chicago, but I don't know how that works because
of having to prove your trip and you are going by car.

Just a thought on that anyway.

I had sent this message out in the afternoon yesterday, and apparently 
something happened so I didn't see it until well after 6 pm.  So, am I
right in assuming that no one met Tuesday?

I'd still be up for a social gathering, if anyone's interested. (At the 
lightning talks I almost saw the Full Ingy.  Like Perseus, I averted my 
gaze.  Nonetheless, I could still use a stiff drink.)  Although a) this 
weekend is bad for me personally, b) next week aint great either, with 
the 4th and all.

So, let's see a cyber-show of hands: who would be up for a social 
beer/food gathering in the semi-near future?  Would you mind trekking up 
to the North Side for fine Belgian beer and food (the Hopleaf) or would 
you prefer to keep it close to downtown (the Elephant and Castle, or old 
standby Monk's, or somewhere else).  Or any other ideas?  And would, 
say, Tuesday July 7th be acceptable?

The Pittsburgh Perl Mongers are hard at work planning this years
Pittsburgh Perl Workshop. (We are also planing YAPC::NA 09 but more on
that later. But go ahead and mark your calendars for June 22 through
Wednesday, June 24, 2009). Mark your calendars this years PPW will be
October 11th and 12th 2008.

At this year YAPC::NA I was surprised at how much was going on before
and after YAPC. So if you plan on coming to PPW and would like to have
a hack-a-thon or something before or after the official PPW event and
would like some help planing that let us know and we will do what we
can.

PPW09 will have more training, more fun, and more talks than every
before but if you think we might be missing something send us a note
about it and maybe we can make it happen. We can not make everyone's
wishes come true but we would like to try.

The Hopleaf sounds good. I haven't been there yet.

Jos? wants me to get some video of some of the Chicago people for a
super-secret project he's working on. I could do that when we get
together.

And I have a Barcelona.pm shirt to give away too :)

Also, Oktoberfest time is approaching, and we've missed organizing an
get-together for that. We should put something on the calendar and
make plans in advance.

Hopleaf is great but completely packed.  Somebody needs to make a
reservation for a group our size.

They don't do reservations.  On a Tuesday night, especially since at 
least some food would be ordered (I haven't had the mussels in a while) 
we would get tables either in the back dining room or the upstairs bar.

But does anyone else have a problem with cruising so far north on a 
weeknight?  (Pete?)  I live in walking distance to the Hopleaf, so I'm 
biased.  Map Room is also a good possibility and equally off the L (both 
it and Hopleaf require hiking a few blocks from a station, although for 
Hopleaf, you can take the Clark bus, either from downtown or Addison, 
and getting off at Foster will put you at its doorstep.)  But apparently 
The Map Room don't have food except on Tuesdays, when the food is 
catered and free, and apparently the place gets crowded as a result.

Oh, that'd be the least of my worries.

My big problem at the moment is that I bowl in leagues on both Tuesday and 
Wednesday nights, and so I'm out of any meeting on those nights until the 
end of August.  So don't worry about me :-)

However, the value that is returned ( even if the connection fails ) is the one at the end of the sub.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Use eval. DBI will die on error, so your condition is not being reached.

eval {
     $dbh = DBI->connect(x, y, z);
}

return 2 if $@;

perldoc -f eval for more info. Also look into the $DBI::errstr value.

This is configurable by setting the value of the DBI RaiseError 
attribute to 0 or undef, and by assigning an error handling method to 
the HandleError attribute.  (Similarly, there's a PrintError attribute 
that controls whether you get STDERR output.)  perldoc DBI goes over it 
all.

If you don't know these features, they're really really handy.
