The first meeting of Wellington Perl Mongers will be in nine days on February the 12th. As tradition dictates, the first meeting of the year will be a lightning talk meeting. You can read more about it here: http://wellington.pm.org/lightning_talks.html Short story: we want a bunch of people to 'sign up' to do one or more short talks (a maximum of 5 minutes each) on pretty much any topic. You definitely don't need to talk about Perl :-) So ... reply direct to me with your name and talk topic(s) and we'll see you all on the 12th. Cheers Grant From andrew.ruthven at catalyst.net.nz Wed Feb 6 17:47:49 2013 From: andrew.ruthven at catalyst.net.nz (Andrew Ruthven) Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2013 14:47:49 +1300 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Schwern in Wellington Message-ID: <1360201669.17647.56.camel@dirk.catalyst.net.nz> Hey, I was chatting with Michael Schwern over dinner while at linux.conf.au 2013 last week and he mentioned we was coming to New Zealand for the NZ AU Open Research Conference and Kiwi Foocamp this week and weekend. With a surprisingly minimal amount of arm twisting we've managed to change his flights, and he's coming down to Wellington at a silly time on Monday morning, and will be here until Wednesday. He's going to run some tutorials and talks etc at Catalyst and I've managed to get at least one (maybe more) opened up to external parties. The first public one we have is on Modern Perl. Schwern has said he'd like to run this in a format of "I have problem $x I'd like to solve" and he'll lead a discussion/talk/whatever from there. This will be Monday afternoon 1:30pm - 5pm. We're not sure how many seats we will available or the cost. We'll know more tomorrow afternoon, and the cost will probably be a couple of hundred bucks, again we'll know more tomorrow once we have a handle on numbers. Sorry about being so vague but this has only come together today. We may *also* have seats available in an intermediate level git tutorial (Monday morning) and a Perl style guide to style guide session (Tuesday morning) that Schwern has started developing. He ran a basic git tutorial at LCA 2013 last week and they had to kick 20 odd people out of the room due to clogging up the stairs. We'll know about those ones tomorrow afternoon. If you're interested in any of these, please let me know ASAP. For those who don't know, Catalyst is in Catalyst House, 150 Willis St. If you know other people who'd be interested in these sessions, please feel free to pass this on. Late volunteers definitely welcome :-) See you all tomorrow evening. And Michael Schwern is in town so come along and meet him too. 6:00pm Tuesday 12 November 2013 Level 3, Catalyst House 150 Willis Street Wellington http://wellington.pm.org/ As I said on the IRC channel, everyone is welcome to attend (so bring your friends) and anyone who wants to do a 5 minute talk is especially welcome. If you are doing a talk and want to use slides, you can email them to me in advance and I'll load them up on the presentation machine. Slides in PDF, Open/Libre Office or HTML should work. You can also bring your own device and plug it in to the projector - just be warned that any time spent trying to make the projector work will cut into your 5 minutes. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 12th so if you've come up with a longer talk then let me know so that I can book you in for next month. Message-ID: <1360717222.2553.43.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> Hi Mongers Thank you to all the participants in last night's meeting. Special thanks to the people who did a talk. The slides and links are up on the web site now: http://wellington.pm.org/archive/ The next meeting will be on Tuesday March 12th. I've decided it might be a good idea to do a talk about what Wellington Perl Mongers is all about so it should be a good opportunity to get some new people along and introduce them to the fun. I'd love to book in at least one other speaker. So reply to me if you want to book a slot. See you there Grant
