Martyn Smith is going to be telling us about something, but the exact subject seems to be changing by the day - stay tuned for details. Donovan Jones has promised to update us on his progress with detecting lame delegations in the .nz DNS space. He's making noises about wriggling out of that commitment but we all know he'll come through in the end. There is space for another speaker so if you'd like to talk or you'd like to suggest a topic you want to hear about then reply to me. See you next week Grant From grant at mclean.net.nz Mon Jun 8 15:50:27 2009 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Tue, 09 Jun 2009 10:50:27 +1200 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Meeting Tonight Message-ID: <1244501427.18805.16.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> Hi Mongers! Once again I've been rather slack with sending out the reminders but ... The June meeting of Wellington Perl Mongers is this evening. 6:00pm Tuesday 9 June 2008 Level 3 Catalyst House 150 Willis Street Wellington http://wellington.pm.org/ We have two talks lined up this month: * Martyn Smith is going to talk about 'Database Inspection' which is the larger topic that led him to develop 'pii'. * Continuing on the database theme, Andrew McMillan is going to talk about PL/PgSQL a procedural language within Postgres. Donovan Jones is going to defer telling us about his progress on fixing .nz lamers until next month. I could potentially come along and show it off if people are interested.. Sam. Thanks to our speakers - Martyn, Andrew and Sam. The slides/links are up on the web site: http://wellington.pm.org/archive/ Mark your diaries ... the next meeting of Wellington Perl Mongers will be on Tuesday July 14th. Douglas is still deciding whether he'll be able to talk to us on the subject of: getting data out of TWiki. Lesley is also putting together a talk on the use of Open Source software at Opus, but has yet to commit to a specific date :-) If you have a burning desire to talk about something interesting at the next meeting then let me know. The conference organisers have just opened the "Call for Miniconfs". The MiniConfs are 1-day mini-conferences that will be hosted in the first two days of the LCA2010 5-day schedule. http://www.lca2010.org.nz/media/news/47 I think we should submit a proposal for a Perl miniconf to be organised by Wellington.pm. If the proposal is accepted then we'll solicit talk proposals from the wider LCA community, but it would be advantageous if we had some proposals/ideas/sample talks to mention in our initial proposal. To make things a little more interesting, I think it would be a good idea to have a theme. My suggestion (and please chip in with yours) is 'Modern Perl'. This might encompass: * modules (eg: Moose, Catalyst, GUI libraries) * practices (eg: PBP, TDD, packaging modules) * new features in Perl (eg: 5.10) * futures (eg: the state of Perl6 implementations) * tools (eg: Padre, Perl::Critic) etc. So please reply here on the list or talk to me directly. Let me know your ideas and what you can do to help. Once we've got some feedback I'll try and knock it into a proposal. Let's make this happen! Or we can show it off at the next month's session - don't want to call off a social ;-) Sam.
