Meeting Next Week ==================== The August meeting of Wellington Perl Mongers is next Tuesday (August 14th) at the usual place and time: 6:00pm Tuesday 14 August 2007 Level 2, Eagle Technology House 150 Willis Street Wellington http://wellington.pm.org/ This month's speakers: Finlay Thompson - Building a daemon with POE How to build a simple event-driven daemon application using Perl's POE modules, including: accessing databases, forking sub processes and error handling. Martyn Smith - Data hidden in plain sight ? or is it? If you want to make some information available via your web site but you don't want it to be readily retrievable by web scraping robot scripts, Martyn will show you some things that won't defeat his robots. See you there. 2. Dinner with a Visiting Perl Monger ===================================== Dave Cross (Perl author, trainer, London.pm member, former pm.org coordinator for The Perl Foundation, etc) will be passing through Wellington on his vacation next weekend (not *this* coming weekend). The current plan is that some of us will meet up with Dave for beer and a meal on the evening of Saturday the 18th of August. If you would like to come along then please reply to me directly (off list ... mailto:grant at mclean.net.nz ) and I'll let you know the venue/timing information as plans solidify. Absolutely anyone is welcome, just let me know if you're interested. 3. NZOSA - Open Source Awards ============================= Just in case you've missed hearing about this, or you've been meaning to put in a nomination but haven't got around to it yet ... The New Zealand Open Source Awards 2007 recognise and promote: * The contributions of New Zealanders to open source projects and open source generally. * Exemplary use of open source by New Zealand organisations. Nominations close on Friday 17 August, so if you know of some New Zealand individual or group who deserves recognition for their contribution to, or innovative use of, Open Source Software then race along to the web site and put in a nomination now: http://www.nzosa.org.nz/ Cheers Grant From grant at mclean.net.nz Mon Aug 13 16:22:20 2007 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2007 11:22:20 +1200 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Meeting Tonight In-Reply-To: <1186453945.26390.33.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> References: <1186453945.26390.33.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> Message-ID: <1187047341.1337.20.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> Hi All There is a meeting tonight, but unfortunately Finlay has had to leave town suddenly (under a cloud) so his POE talk will have to wait until next month. Sam has kindly offered to step into the gap and will walk us through a DBIx::Class/Catalyst/TT application he's been working on recently. To put that into a more English-like description ... 'Catalyst' is a web application framework which uses the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture (like Ruby on Rails). 'Catalyst' is also the name of the company supplying the beer this evening, but that's just a coincidence. DBIx::Class is a Object Relational Mapping (ORM) layer that automatically makes database records available as Perl objects. It's the 'M' in this MVC combo. The Template Toolkit is a popular Perl templating solution that can be used for generating HTML. It's the 'V' in MVC In this particular example, the 'C' stands for Curry but you'd need to see it to understand why. Martyn will also be talking to us about web scraping and stuff. Please start thinking about what you'd like to talk about (or hear a talk about) at a future meeting. See you at the usual place at 6pm this evening. A big thank you to Martyn and Sam for a couple of interesting talks. And thanks to everyone else - especially those who hung around to chew the fat afterwards. There are no slides to put up on the archive page (for reasons which would be obvious to anyone who was there), so if you missed the meeting then I guess you'll be kicking yourself :-) The next meeting will be on September the 11th (sounds ominous) and we've got Finlay lined up to talk on POE, Donovan to talk on LibXML and probably Brenda and Neil to talk on Database stuff. See you there. Likely plan is to go down a few doors for a curry about 8:00. Look forward to seeing some of you there.
