Now that I've got it going, I'd like to point you the new Vancouver.pm website (still located at http://vancouver.pm.org). I just hacked up a quick Wordpress blog, as the prospect of using WebDAV to edit static html didn't really appeal to me. I'm very open to suggestions on content and layout, and if anyone wants to submit some writeups I can set you up with an account. If you're not a fan of the new site, don't worry, you can either subscribe to the RSS feed (available on the site) or keep checking this mailing list, which will still get updates on upcoming events and such. Next, there's going to be a hackathon at the Bryght offices (in Gastown) on Friday, May 11th, from 1pm to 1am. There are already quite a few people signed up, and it promises to be a great opportunity to hack and meet other perl hackers. More information can be found on the Socialtext Open Source wiki (http://www.socialtext.net/stoss/index.cgi?super_happy_grow_op_dev_house) - Socialtext is a Palo Alto based Wiki company that employs a lot of talented perl programmers, and they're helping plan the hackathon as part of a week long company excursion in Vancouver. Since we'll have a few extra perl enthusiasts in town that week, I'd like to organize a meeting for Wednesday, May 9th, at the Sophos offices (580 Granville Street, downtown Vancouver). I'm thinking 7pm for a start time, and I'll try to organize some sponsorship for pizza or some other edible. I've already got one or two ideas for presentations, but anyone who would like to present something, from a 5 minute lightning talk to a 30 minute in-depth talk, please let me know. -chris From Peter at PSDT.com Mon Apr 16 16:36:46 2007 From: Peter at PSDT.com (Peter Scott) Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 16:36:46 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] New website, upcoming hackathon, and next meeting In-Reply-To: <625b0a180704161615l5038432k596a69d6a51ebbcd@mail.gmail.com> References: <625b0a180704161615l5038432k596a69d6a51ebbcd@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20070416163534.025b5640@mail.webquarry.com> At 04:15 PM 4/16/2007, Chris Simmons wrote: >Since we'll have a few extra perl enthusiasts in town that week, I'd >like to organize a meeting for Wednesday, May 9th, at the Sophos >offices (580 Granville Street, downtown Vancouver). Would you be interested at all in doing a presentation at some PM meeting in the future? I know it's a bit (a lot!) of a commute for you, but if you're ever in Vancouver it'd be great to have you out. I'm not asking you for a commitment or anything, just extending an open invitation. For those of you working with legacy Perl systems (and even those who aren't), I highly recommend Peter's book Perl Medic. It's a good read and has a lot of valuable advice for cleaning up others' mess (and stopping yourself from contributing to said mess). -chris From Peter at PSDT.com Mon Apr 16 18:44:11 2007 From: Peter at PSDT.com (Peter Scott) Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 18:44:11 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] New website, upcoming hackathon, and next meeting In-Reply-To: <625b0a180704161648u4163b6a3md32927ace0740d73@mail.gmail.co m> References: <625b0a180704161615l5038432k596a69d6a51ebbcd@mail.gmail.com> <6.2.3.4.2.20070416163534.025b5640@mail.webquarry.com> <625b0a180704161648u4163b6a3md32927ace0740d73@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20070416184159.0268f480@mail.webquarry.com> At 04:48 PM 4/16/2007, Chris Simmons wrote: >Would you be interested at all in doing a presentation at some PM >meeting in the future? Thank you very much, and I'll be sure to talk with you before I plan another Vancouver trip. I've got an almost completely non-technical talk that's gone down very well at the Pittsburgh Perl Workshop and LA.pm. Of course, Vancouver.pm is also welcome to make a field trip to the island. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Everyone, On behalf of some work colleagues I'm sending round an advert for a Perl job based at the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo, Hawaii to work on developing software to be used in the monitoring, handling, distributing and scientific analysis of astronomical data. Full details and application info are here: http://www.jach.hawaii.edu/admin/employment/Programmer1_0307.html Tim Jenness is the co-author of the book `Extending and Embedding Perl'. They're a really good bunch to work with, so if anyone feels like living the laid-back lifestyle then I encourage you to apply. Unfortunately the deadline is this Friday, the 27th April so time is rather short. So, who am I? A quick intro then... I work at UBC on astronomical software development for a new instrument to go on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The data processing pipeline for this instrument is written entirely in OO Perl but I also get my hands dirty with C. My background is astronomical research (brought up on Fortran) and I used to have fun writing code in my spare time while being paid to do research. Now it's the other way round... :) I've been in Vancouver for 2.5 years or so, and playing with Perl for about three. Cheers, Andy
