Meetings will resume in October. Speaking of meetings, it's hard to arrange for speakers when I'm not sure who the target audience is. There are lots of people on this list, and I don't know if you are all quiet because you already know everything, or because the talks that we've been having are too advanced or uninteresting. Please fill out the following brief survey so that I will have a better idea of what you are interested in, and can make the meetings more relevant to you. 1.) How long have you been using Perl? 2.) How would you rate your skill level with Perl? 3.) What do you use Perl for? 4.) Would you prefer to attend social or technical meetings? 5.) What level of technical talk would you be most likely to attend? 6.) Please rate the following possibilities for talks in order of preference: - an introductary talk on modules, databases, mod_perl or suchlike - embedding perl - a talk by Gurusamy Sarathy - bioinformatics or other scientific computing with perl - tricks learned from mjd's Higher Order Perl book - fill in with your favouite topic that I have missed 7.) It's not very perl specific though. It seems a bit odd considering I'm only 20 feet from you in the same office.. but... +1 for you putting together a presentation on Selenium. It looks awesome and judging by the result of my straw poll at a recent meeting, most people doing web dev still need a testing solution.. perhaps Selenium is it. Lucky for us, since no proposals have been submitted, the deadline for 2006 has been extended to October 15th. I've been gathering prices and max capacities from potential local venues. Will has graciously offered to loan us CanSec's a/v equipment (2 projectors, audio equipt for 1, possibly 2 tracks) and networking gear (lots). Still todo: 1.) Decide on venue and possible alterate venue. 2.) Look into hotels and dorm/hostel space (of course this will be determined by the venue location). 3.) Sort out things like chairs, dividers, catering, if not provided by the venue. 4.) Feel out sponsorship possibilities. I propose the following: anyone who is seriously interested in helping plan this join me Monday night (Oct 3rd) at Trees, and we can sort out who's going to do what, then we will reconvene the following Monday (Oct 10th) to pick the best possible solutions (and alternatives) and write up the proposal. --h
