From glim at mycybernet.net Tue May 10 20:18:00 2005 From: glim at mycybernet.net (Gerard Lim) Date: Tue, 10 May 2005 23:18 -0400 Subject: [Van-pm] Yet Another Perl Conference final details Message-ID: Hi everyone... There have been some recent developments on the YAPC::NA front, and it has been suggested to us that a reminder might be helpful to some people, so here's a quick summary of the event. Summary ------- YAPC::NA 2005 (Yet Another Perl Conference, North America) in Toronto, Canada, Monday - Wednesday 27 - 29, June 2005 Home page: http://yapc.org/America/ Conference Location: http://89chestnut.com/ A facility of the University of Toronto Accommodations -------------- Normally registration information would come first, but accommodations are the bottleneck -- our main group reservation (at the conference hotel) expires at the end of the week, and as the conference approaches it will be extremely difficult to find a hotel anywhere in the city. Info on how to book at: http://yapc.org/America/accommodations-2005.shtml Registration ------------ Register now! :-) We are on track to break attendance records at YAPC::NA this year, and we could even sell out before the conference starts. The price for the full 3 days is USD$85. We keep it insanely low through many generous sponsorships and the all-volunteer organizational and speaking crews. Registration info: http://yapc.org/America/register-2005.shtml Direct registration link: http://donate.perlfoundation.org/index.pl?node=registrant%20info&conference_id=423 Conference Speaking Schedule ---------------------------- We've got an excellent selection of talks and speakers for Perl programmers of all levels, beginner through expert. We are fortunate enough to have presentations coming from some of the most recognizable names in Perl programming today, including Larry Wall, Chip Salzenberg, Dan Sugalski, Autrijus Tang and brian d foy. Summary -- http://yapc.org/America/schedule-2005/summary.html Day 1 -- http://yapc.org/America/schedule-2005/day1.html Day 2 -- http://yapc.org/America/schedule-2005/day2.html Day 3 -- http://yapc.org/America/schedule-2005/day3.html Lightning Talks --------------- These short (5 minutes each) talks, presented by the conference attendees, are a YAPC tradition. If you're interested please read more about them and sign up: http://www.justanotherperlhacker.org/lightning/ [ This message was sent by Gerard Lim on behalf of the YAPC::NA 2005 Conference organizing committee of the Toronto Perl Mongers. Thanks for your patience and support. ] From hvc at cpan.org Wed May 18 18:11:28 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 18:11:28 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] June meeting Message-ID: <20050519011128.GH21276@soundwave.net> Hello, Ok, time to plan a meeting for early June. Would you be more inclined to come out for a lecture style presentation to learn something rather than to a more social sort of get-together? Maybe you just want to show off your latest project. Who wants to give a talk? Let's have a bunch of speakers, each with 15-20 minutes to present their projects, hacks, obsessions, peeves. We're not going for lightning talk rapidity here, nor the pressure of giving a full length presentation. Tell us why you did what you did, what you would have done differently, what worked particularly elegantly, you know, why it's cool. This could also be a useful way to get feedback on a project that's in progress, or to practice a talk (Dorian?). Simple stuff is fine, and probably better than overly elaborate, complicated things.. though they also have their charm. Some examples: My favourite way to do i/o with Perl How I made two formerly incompatible things talk to each other Perl's place between open source statistics and graphing packages Regex engine hacks (Will?) ... Any takers? --h From hvc at cpan.org Mon May 23 20:02:27 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 20:02:27 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] June meeting In-Reply-To: <20050519021845.GD14239@mailchannels.com> References: <20050519011128.GH21276@soundwave.net> <20050519021845.GD14239@mailchannels.com> Message-ID: <20050524030227.GB6694@soundwave.net> On Wed, May 18, 2005 at 07:18:45PM -0700, Ken Simpson wrote: > I'm in for presenting on our bits. I'll talk about some tricks I've learned recently about using Perl with open source packages like R and Weka for doing statistical analysis of data. To avoid Brunix, since I think there is some crossover between the groups, let's say Tuesday June 14th. We can probably use ActiveState's space; I'll get it set up. --h From hvc at cpan.org Sat May 28 15:29:35 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Sat, 28 May 2005 15:29:35 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] June meeting In-Reply-To: <20050526185141.GB28421@mailchannels.com> References: <20050519011128.GH21276@soundwave.net> <20050519021845.GD14239@mailchannels.com> <20050524030227.GB6694@soundwave.net> <20050526185141.GB28421@mailchannels.com> Message-ID: <20050528222935.GB3059@soundwave.net> Hm, thought I sent this out earlier, but apparently not. We have space and a projector at ActiveState/Sophos Tuesday, June 14th at 7:30. So far Ken and myself are going to speak; Philippe has expressed some interest too. There's probably time for about 1 more presentation on top of those 3.. don't want to drag it out too late since it'll be a nice night and therefore necessary to go for beers afterwards. :) --h From hvc at cpan.org Sat May 28 15:39:33 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Sat, 28 May 2005 15:39:33 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] Regular meeting date In-Reply-To: <20050526212316.GQ5745@activestate.com> References: <20050526212316.GQ5745@activestate.com> Message-ID: <20050528223933.GC3059@soundwave.net> On Thu, May 26, 2005 at 02:23:16PM -0700, Luke Closs wrote: > I'm a perl developer here at Sophos, and I'm excited about the perl > mongers starting up again. Excellent! I'm glad there is excitement, I really want to get this going again regularly. > Unfortunately, Tuesday is juggling night for the Vancouver Juggle > club, so myself and a few other perl hackers/jugglers won't be able to > make it. Certainly it can be moved; I picked the date mostly at random. The constraints I was working with were Vanlug (third monday of the month), Brunix (second wednesday) php group (second thursday), and also YAPC::NA which is at the end of June. Either the first or last week of the month does a reasonable job of distributing these events uniformly. Monday, wed, thurs? How does the last Monday of the month starting in July work for everyone else? --h From davidl at ActiveState.com Tue May 31 13:50:24 2005 From: davidl at ActiveState.com (David Labatte) Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 13:50:24 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] Regular meeting date In-Reply-To: <20050528223933.GC3059@soundwave.net> References: <20050526212316.GQ5745@activestate.com> <20050528223933.GC3059@soundwave.net> Message-ID: <1117572624.30401.399.camel@tang.ActiveState.com> On Sat, 2005-05-28 at 15:39 -0700, Helen Cook wrote: > On Thu, May 26, 2005 at 02:23:16PM -0700, Luke Closs wrote: > > I'm a perl developer here at Sophos, and I'm excited about the perl > > mongers starting up again. > Well if Luke thinks it's awesome I'll delurk to express my +1 :) > Excellent! Monday, wed, thurs? +1 for Mon. But I'm not picky since I share Luke's excitement about the rebirth of van-pm and will be doing my best to spread the Awesomeness of it my fellow Sophos perl developers (if Luke doesn't beat me to it!). > > How does the last Monday of the month starting in July work for everyone > else? > I'm there along with whoever I can drag with me, oh and see you on the 14th too :) Cheers, Davidl --
