From hvc at cpan.org Fri Jun 10 18:02:07 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 18:02:07 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] Announcement: June Meeting Message-ID: <20050611010207.GC32537@soundwave.net> Hello Everyone, Our June meeting will be next week. It's going to be a series of talks, and should be quite interesting. It would be great to get a rough headcount, so please drop me a note if you plan on coming. http://vancouver.pm.org When: 7:30 PM, Tuesday, June 12, 2005 Where: ActiveState/Sophos, 580 Granville Street http://maps.google.com/maps?q=580+Granville+St+Vancouver To be followed by an excursion to a nearby drinking establishment for refreshments. Topics: Ken Simpson -- "New Open Source Voodoo from MailChannels" Helen Cook -- "Using Machine Learning to Tag Photos" Philippe Chiasson -- "Writing Tests with Apache::Test" Speaker Bios: Ken Simpson Ken's latest endeavour, MailChannels.com, plays some clever tricks with dns, Apache and mod_perl to eliminate the false positive problem from filtering email. Previously, as a lead developer at ActiveState (now a division of Sophos), Ken worked on core open source development tools and technologies. Ken has an honours degree in computer engineering from Simon Fraser University. Helen Cook (http://flickr.com/photos/hvc) Helen currently works on finding signal in noise for Memotrax.com. She was a lead programmer at mgrok Corporation from 2002 to 2003, and developed video recognition technology to summarize sports games. Helen's main interests are the encoding and visualization of information in the context of human knowledge networks. She received her BSc in mathematics from UBC in 2002. Philippe Chiasson (http://gozer.ectoplasm.org/) Philippe started working on the mod_perl project in 1998, writing some Apache::* modules on CPAN and eventually started helping out with mod_perl 1.0 & 2.0 development. In 2005, he joined the ranks of ActiveState's Perl Cult. He now spends a lot more time dealing with Perl itself instead of working on high-traffic websites for TicketMaster. Instead, he is now often busy building and debugging Perl things, including Perl, mod_perl and all of CPAN (yes, all of it, regularly) on a large variety of platforms. Philippe is also the current maintainer of mod_perl 1.0. --h From krahnj at telus.net Sat Jun 11 03:09:25 2005 From: krahnj at telus.net (John W. Ok, a bunch of things to say here: I was really impressed with the turnout for the last meeting. Definitely a success, and something that should happen far more often. Which brings me to the next point.. Let's set a regular meeting date. I previously had suggested the last Monday of the month, but there were a couple of nays to that. The last Thursday of the month fits nicely around other events, and I have heard no opposition to that. So barring any very loud complaints, Thursday it will be. That makes the next meeting Thursday, July 28th, and the one after that Thursday, August 25th. Are there any requests for talk topics? Who would like to speak? --h From hvc at cpan.org Sun Jun 26 09:20:02 2005 From: hvc at cpan.org (Helen Cook) Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 09:20:02 -0700 Subject: [Van-pm] July Meeting Message-ID: <20050626162002.GD20775@soundwave.net> Hi, I've gotten one proposal for a talk so far, from Kevin Scaldeferri, a developer at Yahoo who has offered to give his OsCon talk on "How to Serve a Billion Requests a Day with Perl". He won't be able to make the Thursday date, so contradicting myself again, let's make the next meeting Monday, July 25th. --h
