For some reason this email didn?t arrive to me until after 1:30pm today. None of the emails from pm.org did. I?ve since switched to using my pobox hosted mail for this mailing list, hoping to avoid the delay in the future. Sorry guys .. I did post it on the meetup.com page as well. If I had a paid version of streamyard, it might let me re-use a URL. I'll have to look into that. Yes, there was a general problem with all of perl.org's mail services from late on Apr 28 until the sysadmins fixed something this morning. > None of the emails from pm.org did. I confess I've gotten out of the habit of thinking of the last Thursday in a month as being tpm night. jimk From talexb at gmail.com Thu May 14 19:16:50 2020 From: talexb at gmail.com (Alex Beamish) Date: Thu, 14 May 2020 22:16:50 -0400 Subject: [tpm] Talks for the May meeting Message-ID: Hi All, We will have two talks at this month's meeting, on Thursday May 28: --> Sergio S is going to talk about Migration of Perl to Modern Perl and to Other Languages (e.g., .Net). --> Alex B is going to talk about Using Goto statements and how that relates to Memory Allocation. There will be some Perl and some C. As we've been doing for a while now, this meeting will be virtual, using streamyard to stream the talk. The meeting's stream will be archived to Youtube. I'll start streaming at 650pm, and we'll go live about 7pm. I will send out the URL to the mailing list and post it on the meetup.com page. I understand there was an E-Mail glitch on this mailing list last month -- if you don't get an E-Mail by 655pm, swing by the meetup.com page to get the URL. Looking further out, I want to remind everyone about the Conference in the Cloud that's replacing the live conference (originally planned for Houston). You can find all sorts of information here: https://perlconference.us/tpc-2020-cloud/ It's only $10, and gives you three days of excellent talks. There will be additional rooms for a hallway track. Since that event is going to take place at the end of June, we will not have a June TPM meeting. That means the July meeting will be the next meeting we'll need speakers for -- if you have an idea for something to talk about, let me know, and I'll gladly add you to the agenda. That's all I have for now. Stay home, be well, and wash your hands! Tonight we discovered that streamyard only allows six people's video feeds into the meeting, everyone else was free to listen and comment, so it still worked fine. When I went to share the screen for my presentation, we discovered something else new -- this site warned me that it has potential issues with Chrome (which is the browser I usually use), and sure enough, when it came time to share my screen, the feed from my second screen flickered. I resolved this by moving my presentation to the laptop screen. What would one of these meetings be without technical glitches? It's kind of tradition now. After my somewhat esoteric presentation on gotos and C development, we heard from Jim Keenan who talked about The Perl Conference in the Cloud: https://perlconference.us/tpc-2020-cloud/ This virtual conference is how TPF is dealing with the pandemic; instead of gathering in Houston at the end of June, we're going virtual! The sessions are scheduled run from 11am to 630pm Eastern Time, with Birds of a Feather gatherings before and after for anyone who wants to join in. This conference is open, but The Perl Foundation is asking for a $10 donation to help out (PS It's worth it! And TPF can use the money!) This schedule has been set so that folks on the East coast can attend (8am's not too early!) and the folks in Europe won't be up too much past midnight when the day ends. The individual talks will be available individually after the conference, in case you want to go back and watch some of the content. On a personal note, I'm working with Matthias Bloch on the TPF Fundraising committee, so if you think your organization might have some training money in the budget, Matthias and I would be happy to take that contact information and see if they can sponsor for TPF. So, TPCiC will keep us busy in June, so there will not be a Perlmongers meeting in June, but we'll meeting again in July, and that date is July 30. I'll start to agitate for material at the beginning of July. Stay safe, be well.
