Message-ID: Hi All, September is here, and this month's meeting (for as long as I can remember) has been a series of lightning talks. So far, we have four talks scheduled, in no particular order, 1. Alex B / That module he's always working on 2. Cees H / TBA 3. Shawn S / TBA 4. Stuart W / TBA I'm now imagining that Alan might also have volunteered for a talk. Typically, lightning talks are five minutes -- after which the presenter is enthusiastically gonged off the podium. Depending on how many talks we have, my plan is to gong (politely) at the five minute mark, then perhaps have some discussion about the talk. It's flexible -- the goal of these meetings is education and entertainment, without too much protocol. I'm looking into replacements for Google Hangouts (why, Google, why?), and my research has come up with streamyard.com as a possibility. I'll try it out over the next few days and let everyone know how that's going. I'm recovering from surgery last week, so a couple of things slipped by me in the last few days. There are two meetup.com events with conflicting information, the monthly meeting and the annual Lightning Talks meeting. They are the same event (I should have looked more closely at upcoming events). Rather than delete one of them, and cause even more confusion, I'm going to leave them the way they are. AFAIK, Sachin has corrected the one that pointed to the old (TEK Systems) location. Our monthly meetings are being held at Flightnetwork for the foreseeable future. That may change. I plan to use the streamyard.com service to stream this month's talks to the TPM Youtube account, and I'll post the URL as soon as I can. As I've only used this service in Test mode, I'm not fully aware of its capabilities. I don't know if we can do remote presentations (I suspect not), so I'd ask the folks who are doing lightning talks to be prepared to share either your Google Drive presentations, or be prepared to transfer them to a USB drive. My new laptop does not have MS Office, so I cannot show Power Point presentations natively. I do have an HDMI out cable, so should be able to put the presentations onto the big screen. We'll discover what new technical challenges await us this Thursday. If this is being done as a step in an automatic process to start from a generic skeleton, would it be better: a) just to "touch" the name, then add and commit, before writing the file b) write the generic file, add & commit c) not important either way? From talexb at gmail.com Sun Sep 29 11:11:02 2019 From: talexb at gmail.com (Alex Beamish) Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2019 14:11:02 -0400 Subject: [tpm] Aftermath of September's Lightning Talks, looking forward to October Message-ID: Hi All, Well, Murphy showed up at this month's talks again. I arranged to use streamyard.com to stream this month's talks to Youtube, and that worked well. But -- trying to connect my laptop to the screen in Flightnetwork's conference room didn't work, even though I had (what I thought were) the right connectors. So (thanks to Sachin's suggestion), I shared my screen via meet.com for the local screen, and also shared my screen for my own talk. Good thing the WiFi worked OK. The good news was that I was able to add the other presenter's screens to the stream and then share them -- but I couldn't find a way to show the stream full-screen (I've written to streamyard.com asking about that) -- I tried following the stream live on Youtube (so the image was going to streamyard.com, on to Youtube, and finally back to the conference room), but that introduced so much lag it wasn't workable. We ended up going back to the Control Room view which was a smaller image, but had no lag. Computers. I do still need to go back to the video and edit out the Fiddling Around portion of the presentation near the beginning, and I'll see if I can add some titles. For October, the last Thursday falls on Halloween, so in order to prevent a scheduling conflict with Perlmongers who have kids, I'm going to suggest we have our October meeting on the 24th. I will update the Meetup event later today. I don't have a topic, but I believe Cees had a lightning talk ready (but he was in California), so that's a possibility. Thanks for your patience with my A/V battles -- one of these days, everything will just work, and we'll look at each other with wonder. Maybe .. by Christmas. ;) (Insert the expected punchline here.)
