From talexb at gmail.com Mon Aug 12 05:00:54 2019 From: talexb at gmail.com (Alex Beamish) Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2019 08:00:54 -0400 Subject: [tpm] August meeting - August 29 Message-ID: Hi All, Our August meeting is schedule for the last Thursday of the month, as usual. My thanks to Sachin for hosting last month's meeting -- I really wasn't feeling well. I have a small presentation planned (read: not yet written), and have a new laptop (since the old one died right after the June meeting) which may produce a return to the technical high-jinx of past meetings (ugh). I'm calling for any presenters to step forward! If you have something to present, please let me know, and I'll add you to the list. Looking forward, September is typically our Lightning Talks session, so please let me know if you have something short you'd like to present (either locally or remote). As usual, we aren't hard-core about the five minute limit, but ideally each presentation is brief. Alex Beamish will talk about the background of 'use base' and 'use parent', along with proposed changes to this part of the langauge; and 2. Stuart Watt will present his feedback to the RFC ?Promoting Trust and Confidence in Ontario?s Data Economy? which will even include some Perl. For those new to the group, Stuart's been a regular TPM attendee in the past, and his presentation is in response to this tweet: https://twitter.com/biancawylie/status/1161254302394003456 September is when we have our Lightning talks, so that will be the plan for our September 26th meeting. Start thinking about your topic now -- pick some small topic and do up a 3-4 slide presentation (more if you talk fast). Consider this practice for the rest of the year. You haven't done a presentation in a while? Excellent! This is great exercise -- it burns calories, and makes the lovely beverage in the pub taste even better than you were expecting. It turns out that Google Hangouts has been discontinued (thanks Google), but is still available in some form. Unfortunately, that form was incomprehensible to me in the half hour I had at the beginning of tonight's meeting. Thankfully, Stewart W recorded the presentations on his phone, I'm hoping that he'll be able to upload that video to Youtube. And I'll do some video testing before September's meeting.
