The extreme case is units like the Fusion-io board. If I understand the
idea correctly, it functions like a disk, but eliminates most of the
intermediate handling that a disk requires, going straight to/from the
bus, at bus speeds.

Mega-performance for mega-dollars, and it's a plug-in, so probably won't
fit your laptop.
