I'm thinking that an attachment is where you have

Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="FooBar"
...

--FooBar
...
Attachment 1

--FooBar
...
Attachment 2

etc

So do you mean you had a message with 8000 parts like the above (each 
inside its own tgz) rather than one attachment of a tgz with 8000 files 
in it?
