Perhaps you spoke at the right time!!! This thread has helped me a bit, as I just tried (without success) to install DBD::mysql. I get the same problem, but I don't even have a mysql_config file. I don't remember ever having problems with DBD::mysql before, though it's been a while since I tried. I've had a version of MySQL installed for about 2 years on my laptop. Is mysql_config something new? Relatively new? I'm not much of a DB internals guy, so I don't know. Is it at all related to MySQL::Config modlule? I'm currently using Wamp5 distribution that gets me LAMP for Win32. There is no mysql_config under c:/wamp/mysql/bin. Since "Wamp Server 2.0" was released within the month, I'm reluctant to install it. I'm not a bleeding-edge user. I don't want the x.0 problems to bite me, especially since Wamp Server 2.0 cannot be installed on top of Wamp5. Another clue... December 2007 Seattle Perl Users Group (SPUG) Meeting ==================================================== Topic: Perl Web Testing Speaker: Randal L. Schwartz Meeting Date: Tuesday, 18 December 2007 Meeting Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Location: Terrace Room at The Harbor Steps Cost: Admission is free and open to the public Info: http://seattleperl.org/ ==================================================== This coming Tuesday, December 18th, is the next meeting of the THE SEATTLE PERL USERS GROUP. This month, Randal L. Schwartz will speak about Perl Web Testing: using Test::More and WWW::Mechanize to write automated testing for web applications. If you don't know who Randal is, then you haven't been paying attention to Perl. He has been a Perl community mainstay for nearly two decades, frequenting Perl mailing lists, newsgroups, IRC channels and, more recently, the PerlMonks website. His wikipedia article says this: Randal L. Schwartz (born November 22, 1961) is an American author, system administrator and programming consultant. Schwartz is the co- author of several widely used books about Perl, a programming language for computers, and has written regular columns about Perl for several computer magazines. He popularized the Just another Perl hacker signature programs. He is a founding board member of the Perl Mongers, the worldwide Perl grassroots advocacy organization. He is currently a co-host on FLOSS Weekly. His magazine articles are archived at his Stonehenge (Perl Training and Consulting) website [1] and you may find his PerlMonks postings from his member page [2]. Please RSVP for the meeting, to Gryphon Shafer , and also let us know if you'll be attending the pre-meeting celebration (see below for details). ================ Perl's 20th Birthday On December 18th, 1987, Larry Wall unleashed Perl 1.000 on the world (see the Perl Timeline [3]). We are going to celebrate Perl's birthday with pre-meeting dinner and drinks at the Pike Place Brew Pub [4], and with birthday cake at the meeting. Unfortunately, since its twenty first birthday is next year, Perl will have to wait outside while we enjoy adult beverages and tell Python and Ruby jokes. ================ Thanks again to all the SPUG members that show up at meetings or participate on the list to make the group worthwhile in the first place, and all the JAPHs out there for just being. Meeting Location ================ December's meeting space is provided by the kind folks at shiftboard.com: Terrace Room at The Harbor Steps: - The Harbor Steps is located at 1st & University Ave in Seattle. - Parking available on the street or in Western Ave lots. - The Terrace Room is located on the 6th Floor of the S.W. Building. - Enter the SW Building directly at 1200 Western Ave or use the Main Entrance (SE Building) located on 1st Avenue (next to Ipanema Grill) across from SAM. - We will post signs and/or people at both entrances, and you can also ask the concierge (or anybody else) for spot directions to the Terrace Room. - If you get lost, you can call Bryan's mobile phone (206.427-6436) See you there! As you know, there are always trends to make room for within an increasingly crowded toolbox (and ever expanding harddrive), but for the last 20 years Perl has proved itself to be well worn and immensely valuable to anyone running everything from a scalable datacenter operation, bioinformatics lab, web connected vending machine, and untold millions of other applications. For the better part of 20 years, beyond inspiring a lot of brilliant creativity and a long list of success stories, Perl has remained one of the great, behind-the-scenes work horses within product development, test, web app, and network management lifecycles. Our regular monthly meeting coincided with the date, so we met at a local pub beforehand and had cake and sang during the meeting. Here's a photo of the cake and a recording of us geeks singing: http://seattleperl.org/happy_20th.html Thanks so much for Perl! Besides being a great, fun toy to play with, many of us make our livings working with Perl. -SPUG. p.s. We'd love to have you back some time. Let us know if you'll be in Seattle and would like to come hang out at SPUG. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month, but would be glad to make a special meeting for you. :) From cmeyer at helvella.org Fri Dec 21 07:46:13 2007 From: cmeyer at helvella.org (Colin Meyer) Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 07:46:13 -0800 Subject: SPUG: Happy Birthday, Perl In-Reply-To: <20071221054042.GA17095@wall.org> References: <20071221050536.GA14768@infula.helvella.org> <20071221054042.GA17095@wall.org> Message-ID: <20071221154613.GD14768@infula.helvella.org> Larry's reply didn't get through our crack spam filter: On Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:40:42PM -0800, Larry Wall wrote: > > Thanks! Each new project requires its own perl scripts. - required skill-set: We use Perl for two functions: (1) process and rename output html files, also adding and changing hypertext links to the renamed files; (2) a "live" perl script which reads in the files in a folder and dynamically creates a table of contents frame based on the files. - initially a contract position, but could turn into a permanent position - duration is ongoing. - no stock options; medical and dental benefits paid by company. - Placement is directly through our company - W-2 if permanent; 1099 if contract. - No restrictions on 1099 status - Located near Northgate in Seattle - Telecommuting is possible after an initial period of time learning our product - Primary business: Municipal codes. I looked in the posting headers to see if there was additional admin information, but there was nothing different than the spug-list. I recognize that Andrew sent this message. Don't we have guidelines for job/contract postings? With Tim among other notables at least at one time pushing for Perl certification (my objection: it always seems to cost money or end up being who you know, and it's hard to say what value it represents to a customer or what the cost/benefit ratio is to the certificate holder... oh I know, I know: "sell the dream"), it seems to me that people ought to recognize that one of the first tenets of I is that people representing that they are in business ought to be registered as businesses, and that so-called professionals and their customers who disagree ought not to cheat on their taxes... which is what "independent contractors (wink-wink, nudge-nudge)" amounts to. Do we need a talk on what it takes to be a licensed business in the State of Washington, and how to look up whether your customers or vendors are properly licensed (most of that is on-line these days and doesn't cost anything and takes just minutes with a web browser)? =cut print < [...] > - initially a contract position, but could turn into a > permanent position > - duration is ongoing. > - no stock options; medical and dental benefits paid by company. > - Placement is directly through our company > - W-2 if permanent; 1099 if contract. > - No restrictions on 1099 status > [...] > - Primary business: Municipal codes. They had an employee (my understanding was that they had primarily other duties but did some Perl hacking on the side) who originally set this up. They wanted a contractor back then, to the best of my recollection W-2 was not an option. They didn't want to pay the overhead associated with someone having their own business. The work is under their direction, on their equipment, and on their site... at least initially. They don't want to listen to professional advice (at least my advice): they're happy with the way things are and want them to stay the same. (I'm not mentioning this because they aren't entitled to that opinion or that prospects or even customers aren't entitled to disagree with my recommendations; I'm mentioning it to establish that the work is under their direction and control.) I didn't get the impression that they were going to verify people's business registration status. A company which publishes municipal codes ought to know better, methinks: "W-2 if permanent; 1099 if contract"? I collect the messages that come in to the job posting address, vet them MINIMALLY, do a little text formatting, and forward it on to the list using a bogus no-reply address. I do my best not to misrepresent what the submitter states, but I do try to clarify the subject (they all come in as some variation of: Need PERL programmer) and retarget the introduction if needed. > Don't we have guidelines for job/contract postings? Yes. No non-text attachments. Some amount of Perl (greater than 50% say) involved. And the minimal requested information as listed on the SPUG website. I'm not sure what more you expect. I'm not screening them for their business ethics (they're all at fault in some way). Beyond that, caveat lector! -- Andrew B.
