No need to speculate on its origins; Joseph N. Hall says on p. 48 of
his 1998 "Effective Perl Programming":

. . . this is something I have nicknamed the "Orcish Maneuver" (The
"or-cache" . . . Arrgh.) . . . It uses the little-known ||= operator.
