SPUG: Perl regex -> POSIX regex

Does anybody know of a script to convert perl regular expressions to the
extended POSIX expressions? I've cobbled something together, but it's
probably far from ideal.

The problem I'm working on is passing fairly large quantities of text
through about 3,000 different regular expressions, and this isn't the
fastest thing in the world in perl. Flex barfs because of too many
expressions so I have a simple C program that compiles them all once then
loops through the compiled expressions.
