Format or time allowance for the talk is not yet agreed, but I would like to know how much time we think we need and how many of us wants to participate? I think our goal should be to invite students to our meetings & suggest to make Perl club at UoP. Warren came back from Mojo conference in Norway and are planning to offer Mojo community to make the next year Mojo conference at Southampton. In overall, it was very productive meeting, where we talked a lot about Perl and we all cheered that CGI was at last deprecated, nice MOP might come to core & hopefully by 5.22 we might have nice sub signatures finished & etc etc :) Hope you like these news :) Vytas On Wed, Jul 2, 2014 at 8:28 PM, GARLAND DUNCAN wrote: > Can't make it this month. > > On 01/07/2014, Tim Retout wrote: > > Hi all, > > > > Southampton Perl Mongers will meet as usual at 8pm at the Platform Tavern > > tomorrow (Wednesday). > > > > Kind regards, > > > > Tim > > > _______________________________________________ > Southampton-pm mailing list > Southampton-pm at pm.org > http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/southampton-pm > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We each vetoed COBOL and Golang, as I recall. Rust seems quite different to Perl - the emphasis seems to be on memory safety (so the compiler prevents dangling pointers and so on). It has compile-time type checking. It seems designed to interoperate with C code quite easily - structs are laid out identically in memory, which I presume helps. I've started by reading these links today: http://www.rust-lang.org/ http://doc.rust-lang.org/tutorial.html I've got half an idea in mind that an NNTP reader might be a useful project... a bit old school, but there are NNTP interfaces to lots of mailing lists, and networking libraries could use a bit of type safety/concurrency, IMHO. To preempt the question about why it's good to look at other languages - it's the exposure to different concepts/ideas that should make it worth it, even if I don't end up writing any production code using Rust. Look at how much the Perl community has borrowed from Ruby recently! Or read the stackexchange version: https://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/136133/why-should-i-learn-a-new-programming-language So if anyone's interested in joining in, do feel free, and we can compare notes at the next meeting. I'll post updates here if they turn out to be interesting enough! -- Tim Retout From vytdau at gmail.com Thu Jul 10 03:28:34 2014 From: vytdau at gmail.com (Vytautas D) Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2014 11:28:34 +0100 Subject: [Southampton-pm] FYI Message-ID: Some of you might be interested at this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2083389021/create-perl-competition-to-the-php-content-managem -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
