Basically, it ties up a hell of the lot of loose ends that I wasn't quite sure on, as well as introducing some excellent uses of some lesser known functions. I think it's published by Addison-Wesley, and written by Joseph Hall and Randal Schwartz. Well worth keeping alongside the camel. It is supposed to be a nice clean OO language that is more suited to larger projects than Perl is. One of our members is helping to develop a game written in Python, and he swears by it's general cleanliness. The modular approach looks quite nice ( everything is a module ) - but there are some weird things that you come across. One of the weirdest things that I've spotted is the way Python passes by reference in assignments. That'll take a bit of getting used to. I don't know, I'm still interested in the language but my progress would be a lot faster if Perl didn't make me feel like anything else was a linguistic straitjacket. They have a neat 'Show me where all the PM user groups are' thingy. I think that southampton.pm.org's website ought to kick off Perl code everytime it's accessed ( whether that's a new process or mod_perl ). > what exactly ARE the (current) objectives? :) Current objectives:- 1. Promote the use of Perl in the region. - Convincing businesses to use it - Leading by example, Sotonians, etc. 2. Form a community to allow Perl programmers to exchange ideas. - Web-based bulletin boards - informal meetings 3. Aid newbie Perl programmers in getting better. - Q+A mailing list 4. Think of interesting things to do in Perl. - Decent projects - Unexpected uses thereof ( like Wayne's SDL stuff ) 5. Umm.. implement number 4. - Yeah, sort of obvious, but it doesn't always happen 6. Evangelise the language to anyone who'll listen. - If you don't already... 7. Debunk some of the crap that's spun by VB/MS boys about our language. - I think we've all heard some of this... 8. Make a show at some of the YAPC events. P. Architecture to CPAN cross referencer. something that would display graphically a kind of system architecture(s) and/or concept, and then provide hotlinks on the 'conduits' which represent the Perl modules that have been written to handle the protocol/ concept bits. e.g.: e.g. one sec, hmm, I think I'm trying to do the Cookbook, but with (live) pictures too! cross reference to CPAN, and working exaples, maybe in some kind of online test bed (pick carefuly, security :) (altho all examples could include the use of Safe, and or Penguin (Penguin is perls equivelent of Java Applets)) 2. something that takes a data structure outputed by , say, Data::Dumper (and/or the XMLDumper one too) and turns it into PEGS diagram, I suspect this has already been done, but maybe not online. use Thinking::Future; "Taylor, Paul" wrote: > > I'm going to be knocking up a website for southampton.pm in the next > > couple of weeks.
