Here's directions to get you there: http://www.plazasingapura.com.sg/find.htm. The plan is to do something similar to our last meetup: we'll meet at 4pm (I imagine people will be trickling in over the course of the evening as other commitments end), and around 6pm or so we'll head off elsewhere to eat, drink and make conversation. Keeping things casual, we won't have scheduled talks or any such yet, but I'd like to try a "everybody talks for ten minutes about something interesting to do with Perl" type thing. My ten minutes will be about Perl Mongers, where we can go from here, and how we can best contribute to the Perl community in Singapore. If you are "of the Facebooks", you can find all details here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125792487821 See you there! cheers, Gaurav From iftekharul.haque at gmail.com Fri Sep 4 22:45:01 2009 From: iftekharul.haque at gmail.com (Iftekhar) Date: Fri, 4 Sep 2009 22:45:01 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [singapore-pm] Perl Consultancy/Development House Message-ID: Hi All, I'm working with an Australian print publishing company that's sitting on a large pile of DarkPAN Perl code that's been been (in parts) very shoddily written, and badly maintained. We are currently undergoing a review process for a rewrite/rebuild, and are looking at several options. Among them is moving the entire platform to Java. Obviously with several years of Perl development under our belt, internal IT is raring to go to use Catalyst and some of the other more modern tools available in Perl, but we're having a spot of trouble finding good development houses in Perl. Management wants a single point of accountability (and thus payment) for an initiative that might require several developers while internal IT works on maintaining the old system during development of the new system. There seem to be plenty of Java houses that handle these kinds of projects, but we haven't found any for Perl. Ideally, this development house would be in Singapore or Melbourne; we recognize the advantage of working with developers in the next room, or across town, so we can quickly set up meetings and get things moving quickly. There are development houses that do Perl in India, but that's not an option we're considering because of the timezone, cultural, and distance problems (something that's bitten us in the past). Google searches have come up empty as well. Any contacts you may have that do this kind of work would be greatly helpful. Thanks, Ifty. I hope to improve the website and have a better regimen going for our monthly meetups this week. Meanwhile, here's a message asking for Perl resources on the internet. Message-ID: <9E830603-A3FF-46CB-990A-395E1373D864@ggvaidya.com> Hey everybody, I'm going to be crazy-busy this week applying for grad school (!), so I don't have time to try to organize anything resembling a good meetup. I'll decide by this weekend whether we'll just postpone it by a week for this month, or if we'll skip October's meetup entirely and see each other again in November. Of course, if anybody else wants to make it happen, please go ahead :). I'm too busy to organize anything, but not too busy for tea with geeks. cheers, Gaurav
