Yeah, it's a little over-the-top.  Love it or hate it, this is
Damian's style: he takes
an idea and pushes it as far as he can.  The results are sometimes
really interesting,
sometimes overengineered, but usually both.  Have you ever checked out
Getopt::Declare?  or Lingua::Romana::Perligata?
