+1. I tried helping out Neil last week with another beginner's
question, and also gave a pointer to the docs. Now I get the feeling
we're answering homework questions.

"$a1ref = ;" is a reference to an empty anonymous list.
"$a1ref = [undef];" is a reference to anonymous list with one
undefined element in it.
