If you have any bioinformatics and biology information there may be something (I was surprised to see some O'Reilly books on biotechn stuff -- http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/begperlbio/ and http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/bioskills/ ) I would move to a new city only with great caution these days -- the cashflow question is a difficult and important one, and I know several very bright people who have been unemployed for a while. That said, there *are* people finding work, but it /seems/ to be an exception. Message-ID: <20020417234213.GA12775@energoncube.net> ~sdpm~ Perl Mongers, There is a meeting tonight! Also, sorry I haven't written this up from the last meeting. My email had issues starting right after the meeting and didn't get cured until just recently. Open Source Convention: Needless to say there looks to be quite a few members planning on going. Because of the issues with email I haven't discovered if there is going to be any discount codes for Perl Mongers or not. I'll get to that. TShirts: We have decided that we are going to do TShirts again this year. Make some designs and get them to me. We also decided that we are going to try and get a booth at the Open Source Convention this year and sell TShirts to support YAS's sponsorship of Larry, Damian, and that third tenor. ;-) So, if you designing a TShirt make sure the slogan is appropriate for us and to be sold. Any other ideas besides last year's ("Just A Local Perl Hacker"). The best design (as voted by the group) will get some as-yet unnamed prizes. Trust me though, it'll be worth the effort. OS-Con Activities: We were hoping to host some activities for visiting Perl Mongers while in San Diego. If you have any ideas, let us know. Some ideas that have been passed around include a Bird of a Feather, PaintBall, restaurant(s) or bar(s) in/around downtown/gas lamp, frisbee golf, or ??? ~sdpm~ The posting address is: san-diego-pm-list@hfb.pm.org List requests should be sent to: majordomo@hfb.pm.org If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe san-diego-pm-list If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to . Works for me. How do I get there without a car from San Ysidro? I presume this cool little trolley thing will get me near downtown in roughly a half hour from the TJ stop (which I walk by every day :). Is there a stop that's walking distance (up to a mile) from Hooters? -- Randal L. I think that lets you off I'd guess 6 or so blocks south and west of the Hooters (much more south than west). You'll have to transfer from one line to the other though... relevant information can be found at the following URL: http://www.sdcommute.com/service/trolleymap.htm A quick glance at the schedule shows 40+ mins to get to the transfer point at downtown, so I'd guess an hour for the whole trip. Might be worth it to take a cab (at least on the way back, I personally wouldn't recommend riding the trolley to San Ysidro late at night after drinking) At 10:38 PM 4/29/2002, Randal L. Randal> Is there a stop that's walking distance (up to a mile) from Hooters? It looks like the simplest is for me to take the trolley at 6:01pm from TJ to the 12th/market stop arriving around 6:31-ish, then walk 8 blocks west to 4th and market. Unless someone emails me in the next two hours (before I head over for an afternoon of cheap beer and experiences), I'll call that my plan. -- Randal L. I wrote this script, but it "hangs" after 10-30 lines of fast output and there is a lot of files in these directories. When I put in a "sleep 1" command I get a lot more output but then even then it sometimes hangs. Only when I sleep 2 do I get the complete dir listing of all the dirs on our FTP site. So my question to you all is, is there something going on that I don't know about? How come I need this sleep command? Thanks all and have a good time tonight! ------------------------------------------------------------ #!/opt/perl5/bin/perl -w use Net::FTP; $ftp = Net::FTP->new("ftp"); # $| = 1; # Stops output even sooner if set... $ftp->login("cam","simple"); $ftp->cwd("/"); @ls_out = $ftp->ls; foreach $dir (@ls_out) { @dir_output = $ftp->dir("$dir"); foreach $file (@dir_output) { ($date,$time,$size,$name) = split (/\s+/,$file); printf ("%-8s %8s %9s %10s %35s\n",$dir,$date,$time,$size,$name); sleep 1; # ????????? } } ------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Steele CAM Automation Engineer Toppan Electronics, Inc. 858.695.2222 msteele@toppanelectronics.com ~sdpm~ The posting address is: san-diego-pm-list@hfb.pm.org List requests should be sent to: majordomo@hfb.pm.org If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe san-diego-pm-list If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to .
