Reading a EXCEL file

Can anyone point me to some examples of reaading a Excel files.

I am trying to read an excell binary file using the READ(FILEHANDLE, $buf,
$buffersize)
if you do not know what type of data your are expecting, how do you set your
file to be unpack.
I believe the file needs to be unpack when reading binary files? is that
correct?
