Question on param()

Looks like C to me :)

Try using the symbol "$" as the first part of each var name if you want to
use Perl.  I think param is seen as a string in this case, and strings are
(being nonzero) always true.

Also the -w and "use strict;" would catch this sort of thing. HTH,
