Isnt really perl.. but its part of my project

I was just wondering if you guys know how to setup
something like  tech.domain.com instead of
www.domain.com.  I still would like www. to point to
the regular area but i would like the tech.domain.com
to point to a subdirectory.  Do i have to configure
the DNS server to do this?  I would like to automate
the creation of the first name.  Its similar to a
subdomain i suppose.

Any help would be appreciated
