Message-ID: <3946EE25.3A5EBA61@directedge.com> The list has been pretty quiet lately, so here's what's going on... -. There have been quite a new people who joined the list lately. I would like to welcome them to the (rather quiet) Rochester Perl Community. Please feel free to bring up any Perl questions you may have, as well as anything else you think we'd all be interested in. -. O'Reilly: I've recently been in touch with O'Reilly, who sponsors the official Perl Mongers organization, and signed up with their User Group program. This means that all group members can get 20% off any books and software at the O'Reilly store. They sent me a big stack of coupons to use this for, as well as some catalogs. So if you're interested in buying any new books, now you can save some money. They also sent me a T-Shirt, which may be given away at the next meeting :) -. Meetings: We seem to be having a rough go at the meetings. Not many people show up, if any at all. I really need to know what you guys want out of the group. We used to have meetings where someone would present a Perl related topic to everyone. We've also had meetings, aimed at being more social, at a local Pub. Do you have any feelings about which you'd like to have? Is there possibly a better location that would allow more people to attend? I'm trying to get a feel for what would make Rochester.PM the best for everyone, but I'm running out of ideas. Feel free to email me directly. -. O'Reilly 2: Also, as part of being in association with ORA, they are willing to provide the *group* with FREE review copies of books related to Perl. This means that in order to get the books, we need to write up a review of it, and post it to our web site. Not only is this good for us and ORA, but others can get a better understanding of what books to buy. Thanks for showing interest in the Perl group. -- Brian Mathis Direct Edge http://www.directedge.com -- For information on unsubscribing from this list, please visit http://rochester.pm.org From whyte at eznet.net Wed Jun 14 19:21:16 2000 From: whyte at eznet.net (The Whytes) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:19:18 2004 Subject: [rochester-pm-list] YAPC ? After the cosmetic changes, however, Netscape stopped working (as you kindly called to my attention). After noting the problem with netscape, I (unwisely)accepted their invitation to "debug" the problem. Hours later (deep sign) my registry was successfully rebuilt and I could once again boot Windoze 98 and access the internet. The problem lay in Netscape's inability to draw a box as called out in myCascading Style Sheet for HTML_SEARCH. I have removed the box, and all is well again. The most important thing to occur has already been stated-We had a meeting! Why not plan on coming to the next mtg? The time will probably be 8pm on the third Wednesday of July (2000-07-19). The place is yet TBD. Anyone with good ideas about an appropriate (and free) mtg place is welcome to contribute them via this list. Currently under consideration are the Rochester Public Libary (Rundel) which I will check out, and RIT which Brian Mathis will check out. If all else fails, we'll always have Monty's. Five people attended the meeting, but only the four below signed the attendance sheet. Tom Dao Anthony Giardona Brian Mathis Richard Martin Woodward Tom is the proud winner of a T-shirt from O'Reilly, which was won by lot during the meeting. Brian passed out catalogs from O'Reilly. Note that members of our group are now eligible for a 20% discount on orders to O'Reilly. It seemed generally agreed IMHO that one of the primary purposes of our group is to promote the use of Perl. Tom and Anthony discussed the Unix style of password encryption to clear up some unfinished business from Anthony's recent class in Perl. Brian and Richard discussed the topic of secure perl programs and the availability of the source code for public inspection. Richard is seeking desperately to learn how to use the Safe.pm module. He needs to know how to safely "eval" the following piece of Perl: $target =~ /$user_input/ Your comments will be much appreciated by Richard (that's me). There seems to be a fair amount of interest in freelance programming. That topic is sure to come up again. Richard is semi-retired (too old to get a job) and has to look to freelance as a source of food. (Will Perl for Food!) Seriously, we probably can assemble a good team of Perl programmers and provide RaChaCha with a good place to look for our kind of talent. So start attending these meetings and using our list. Where is the conference this year? -- Brian Mathis Direct Edge http://www.directedge.com -- For information on unsubscribing from this list, please visit http://rochester.pm.org From whyte at eznet.net Mon Jun 26 19:07:14 2000 From: whyte at eznet.net (The Whytes) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:19:19 2004 Subject: [rochester-pm-list] YAPC 19100 Message-ID: <3957F032.3823E99D@eznet.net> Gang, Just a brief summary of my YAPC trip last week: Who : Perl Mongers of the World, Larry Wall, Nate Torkington, Damian Conway What : Second annual "Yet another Perl Conference" Where : Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh PA (297 Miles ~ 5 hours from our beloved Rochester) When : June 21-23 Why : To Rule the World YAPC 19100 was great. Kevin Lenzo et al, put together a great conference for all attending. It occurred in the University Center Building on CMU. It took place across 3 contiguous, joinable, rooms on a second floor and a large theatre sized tiered first floor classroom complete with the ghosts of many Chem II finals of days past. There was a "email garden" stuffed with about 20 VA Linux fortified PC's giving access to emails , web etc. Kevin arranged for a "Wavelan" setup that allowed folks equipped with laptops and wavelan wireless modem cards to participate in real time irc. I was not laptop enabled but it appeared like folks were getting into it. ActiveState, VA Linux, OReilly and I believe blackboard.com sponsored much of the proceedings which included a nice lunch every day and breaktimes with coffee, cookies, drinks. I was impressed given the tuition. There was also a dinner on the Thursday made complete with a well organized "Geek trivia quiz" pitting table against table, laptop against laptop. A Linux PC was raffled off too. Perl Monger T shirts and hats were plentiful and on sale. Tuition included a YAPC 19100 T-Shirt and a canvas conference bag. The presentations ranged all the way from highly metaphorical and spiritual sermons by Larry Wall, Jon Orwant, and Dick Hardt prompting folks to think about Perl, its culture, its evolution, its destiny - to the five minute "Whats up with these Python fucks anyway" tongue in cheek slam-a-rama. I prefaced the conference with a day trip to "Fallingwater" which was the 1930 Frank Lloyd Wright designed summer home of EJ Kaufmann of Pittsburgh. (About a 1.5 hour drive away from Pitt) Its a neat place and got me in a real "cerebral" frame of mind primed for taking it all in during the 3 days that followed. As is my personal experience you come away from these things with a firmer grasp of what you dont know and have yet to learn. It really pointed out the vastness of what folks are doing with Perl where the only real limit is your own creativity and desire to learn and ( thats after 5 years of diddling with the stuff too). I highly recommend it for your 2001 conference top ten. Tony -- For information on unsubscribing from this list, please visit http://rochester.pm.org
