The May meeting of the Mongers is tonight, May 19th, from 6:00 to 7:30 in BCHM 102. Unfortunately we have no talks scheduled at the moment although I am hoping that some of you will pop up with something. Personally I will not be able to attend. As for the the rest of the summer, we probably should not have any meetings since I suspect that they will be lightly attended. After tonight's meeting let's get back together in September for another rousing round of Perl talks. -- Rick Westerman westerman at purdue.edu Bioinformatics specialist at the Genomics Facility. Maybe we could do that during the summer? I won't be able to make it but I second the suggestion for meeting during the day. Maybe we could do that during the summer? To me that sounds like a good idea. Summer night hours are, personally, too precious to spend at a Monger's meeting. Mark: maybe you can schedule a room for us? I'd suggest sometime after 11 so that we are all awake by then and before 4. -- Rick Westerman westerman at purdue.edu Bioinformatics specialist at the Genomics Facility. Better attendance from biologist. (Although maybe you think that is a down side?) We will have lunch-time meetings during the summer. Somewhat arbitrarily I have scheduled them for the first Tuesday of the month (e.g., June 2, July 7, Aug 4, Sep 1) from 11:30 to 1:30 in, I hope, WSLR 116. Talks will start at noon and go on to about 1:00. The rest of the time can be for eating and chit-chat. Said room has tables instead of desks and thus we should be comfortable. Get those talks ready for June! I will confirm the time and place as soon as building services gets back to me. -- Rick Westerman westerman at purdue.edu Bioinformatics specialist at the Genomics Facility. So I hope to see you then. Bring lunch and, more important, a talk! I have a topic for June: Bad Code or why people can't program. Perl is a very forgiving language and often people can get by with being sloppy. However when your code is tossing around giga-bytes of data then sloppiness should not be tolerated. My talk will be looking at some code examples from the ABI "SOLiD" code as well as other code that should know better as to how to work with large data structures. BTW, my latest "shudder" on the ABI code is this routine: # Convert a string to uppercase sub convert_to_uppercase{ my($string) = @_; $string =~ tr/[a-z]/[A-Z]/; return $string; } Aside from the sheer stupidness of re-writing a built-in function (e.g., 'uc'), the above routine is guaranteed to be much slower on large strings since it passes by value instead of by reference. Sadly, I have tons more examples to show you. -- Rick Westerman westerman at purdue.edu Bioinformatics specialist at the Genomics Facility.
