His availability in limited to Tuesdays through Thursdays next week and September 13th-15th. While I'd like us to have a meeting soon, I think it would make more sense to wait until September to invite mirod to a meeting. So I open up the floor to a few issues. By the way, an acronym I'll be using liberally when I ask questions about holding meetings is: ISWW ("if so, when and where"). 1. should we have a meeting before the end of August? ISWW? 2. should we have a meeting on September 13th, 14th, or 15th? ISWW? 3. when should we invite mirod? 4. do we want mirod to be a guest or a speaker? I have a feeling our first meeting is going to be introductions and discussion on how to "advertise" the group to local interested parties (i.e. college students and co-workers); this is why I think we should get that out of the way before mirod stops by. Regarding the 4th question, most PM groups have "speaker" visitors who have a module or concept that they talk to the group about. Personally, I'd rather have mirod as a guest and let each of us yap about whatever it is we'd like to yap about. My preferences, then, are: 1. yes, either NEXT Wednesday or NEXT Thursday, anywhere in Mercer County is fine with me (I'm a relative newcomer to the area). 2. yes, any of those is days is fine with me, meeting preferably in a more northern location so that mirod doesn't have to put up with Route 1 any longer than he should. 3. on the september date 4. guest -- Jeff "japhy" Pinyan % How can we ever be the sold short or RPI Acacia Brother #734 % the cheated, we who for every service http://japhy.perlmonk.org/ % have long ago been overpaid? http://www.perlmonks.org/ % -- Meister Eckhart From pm at benizi.com Thu Aug 18 08:57:00 2005 From: pm at benizi.com (Ben 'benizi' Haskell) Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2005 11:57:00 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Princeton-pm] Michel Rodriguez (mirod on PerlMonks) in the area In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: My prefs: 1. I'd like to, yes. Either proposed date works for me. (Aug 24/25) Not sure how informal these things are supposed to be (or how Princeton-PM'ers would like them to be). There's a nice microbrewery in Princeton called Triumph. A bit pricy, but they've got good burgers 'n beer. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=138+Nassau+St.,+Princeton,+NJ 2. Again, yes, and any of those dates works for me. (Sept. 13/14 preferred to the 15th) 3. September; your reasoning sounded right to me. (1st meeting = intro's/logistics) 4. I'd say 'guest', so he doesn't feel pressured to make some big presentation. Looking forward to meeting him; we use XML::Twig quite a bit here at WordNet. As I stated at the meeting, I have my own server on a DSL connection. It's not extremely fast but it's suitable enough for light web work. I have phpBB installed (http://macguyver.nbpfaus.net/~pfau/phpBB2/) and wouldn't mind putting up a forum or web pages for the group if we outgrow the current sites. I believe phpBB includes polling software which might be useful to determine the best time/place to have meetings or other group decisions. I'll send a note to the Princeton Linux LUG mailing list announcing the group. If anyone is interested in them, their web page is at http://www.lugip.org/. Our August meeting went fine -- we consumed a few pints among the four of us (myself, Ben, Thomas, and my co-worker Randy). I've invited XML::Twig author Michel Rodriguez to our September meeting, which I believe we should schedule for September 13th (it's a Tuesday). For the time being, I will still be updating the web site by hand, but as our membership grows in size, web space will be an issue -- somewhere that can support dynamic content is preferable. I've made a couple additions to the site right now; a very brief post mortem of August's meeting is up, and a very brief pre natem (?) of September's meeting is up. One conclusion reached at August's meeting was that, while a place like the Triumph Microbrewery is a good social atmosphere for a meeting, it's probably best reserved for a post-meeting wrap up, rather than the actual meeting itself. If we want to be able to hear each other speak, for example, or want to go over code, or have a presentation (etc.), then we need a quieter and more private environment, such as a library meeting room (see the web site or the list archives for details). I'd also like to have very simple personal information for each of the members on the web site -- but it's entirely at your discretion. I'm going to put my location and company on the site. If you'd like something similar after your name, please email me (not the list) and I'll place it there. I look forward to meeting all of you, either at the September meeting, or possibly even sooner. Please feel free to use this list to attempt to initiate an informal meeting -- if you're looking for people to go to happy hour at a local TGI Friday's or other bar, let us know ahead of time.
