The list is still on.  No one uses it, as you can see.  Feel free to
rally the troops and call a meeting.  My take on the situation is most
people in Phoenix.PM either 1) stopped writing in Perl or 2) moved
away.  The few people left are maintenance programmers.  It's hard to
tailor a meeting towards maintenance programmers.

I was attempting to get on board and never rx'd a reply.  I'm a
fledgling Linux Admin and would love to learn Perl.  I aced the CI26A
PVCC course and could not find the advanced course. I believe it was for
Souse.  I've since migrated to Ubuntu.

Back when Perl Mongers groups were strong and active, that was the
best way to be exposed to things in the Perl camp.  People there had
time to answer your questions and you could compare notes with other
people in the same place as yourself.  That's not true any more.  If
there were a PM meeting, you'd probably be the only person in the
process of learning Perl.  The people who presented and helped teach
are long gone.  What's left, besides books, is discussion on
perlmonks.org, news and articles on perlbuzz.com, chat on IRC, and
those.  I should probably update the website to reflect this
situation.  If you possibily can, go to events like YAPC and Perl
Workshops.  Frozen Perl in MN is coming up.

Well, there are still active Perl Mongers groups out there, just not Phoenix PM so much. I moved away, unfortunately, but fortunately moved to the SF Bay Area where San Francisco PM is alive and well. Monthly meetings, invited speakers, an active mailing list, etc. From what I can tell they didn't used to be active, but someone stepped in and took the lead: finding a meeting space, doing some group marketing to bring in new people, and spending time and money to bring the group back to life. 

All Phoenix PM needs is someone with some energy and free time (and in the area) to decide to bring it back to life. I can guarantee you that there are folks in the area who use perl and would like to talk about it -- you'll just have to find them. 

In the meantime, though, the web and conferences are definitely the way to go.

In the perl-specific world, PerlMonks is where most of the beginners go for help when they don't have local friends who know Perl. The site is a bit... complex, but with some effort it'll make sense.
