If that works out, I think we should have Mark's talk there. If not, Tired Hands sounds like a great second choice. I'd certainly be up for a social meeting there sometime, maybe later in July if the tech talk on Monday works out. As much as I love the beer at Tired Hands, I don't know if I'd call their food "fantastic". Their noshies are great, but for more substantial food I wish they had more than just a few paninis on the menu. Mark Jason Dominus will be giving a talk on the history and internals of lightweight hashes such as the ones Perl uses. The meeting will be from 7-9 PM in Room 508 of Skirkanich Hall at the University of Pennsylvania. Afterwards we will likely go out for something to eat at a nearby restaurant. Location -------- If you've been following the earlier discussion on the list about where we'd be meeting, please note that this is a different location. We will NOT be meeting at Williams Hall. If you go to Williams Hall, you'll miss Mark's talk and will be sad. Skirkanich Hall is at 210 South 33rd St. It is a distinctive-looking green brick building on the west side of 33rd just south of Walnut. A picture of the building and a map can be found here: http://www.facilities.upenn.edu/maps/locations/skirkanich-hall Skirkanich is in the same complex of buildings as where we used to meet in Levine Hall, but it is much harder to get to since you can't get in the front door without a Penncard, and it's a maze to get to from the doors that are open. Yixuan suggests that people arrive a little early at the front door (under the overhang in the picture I linked to above) and he will let us in [1]. See you Monday! Walt 1. Alternatively you can enter through Towne or (if you're lucky and someone holds the door for you) Levine and walk through a maze of twisty passages all alike to get to Skirkanich Hall. You're more likely to end up at the machine shop than Mark's talk. Don't say I didn't warn you! -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... You can take a look at the campus map here: http://www.facilities.upenn.edu/maps The closest garages are the Museum Garage, the Penn Tower Garage, and the building labeled 3335 Chestnut. They're all a 2-3 block walk to Skirkanich. I don't think you'd have much trouble finding street parking that's much closer. That's what most people (including me) have done in the past who've driven to meetings at Penn. Walt -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The slides for my talk are at http://perl.plover.com/yak/HashHistory/ and the lecture notes are at http://perl.plover.com/yak/HashHistory/samples/NOTES.html I'll be glad to answer questions about the material in private or on this mailing list. From waltman at pobox.com Wed Jul 29 18:37:45 2015 From: waltman at pobox.com (Walt Mankowski) Date: Wed, 29 Jul 2015 21:37:45 -0400 Subject: [Philadelphia-pm] ANNOUNCE: Social meeting on Monday, August 3 Message-ID: <20150730013745.GA27674@mawode.com> A few people have been asking me offline for a social meeting in the suburbs, so let's try that for August. They have also suggested a location -- Tired Hands Fermentaria, an excellent new brewpub and restaurant in Ardmore. This coming Monday is the first Monday of August, so I think we should give it a try. Here are the details: http://www.tiredhands.com/fermentaria/ Fermentaria is at 35 Cricket Terrace in Ardmore. It's across the street from the Ardmore Music Hall (which used to be called the 23 East back in the day) at the end of the parking lot next to Bella Italia Pizza. It's also just a few minute's walk from the Ardmore Station on Septa's Paoli-Thorndale regional rail line. There's free parking after 6 PM in the parking lot right outside, on the street, and in other nearby township lots. It has also been suggested to me that we start a little earlier. I'm going to try to get there by 6:30. If you're coming via Septa, there are trains that arrive at 6:06 and 6:39. People will probably arrive at different times, and that's fine. I don't think you'll have much trouble finding us. If you think you might be going, please drop me a line so I know how big of a table to get. See you Monday! Walt P.S. One tip if you get there before me -- Fermentaria has a LOT of beers on tap, many of them quite unusual: http://www.tiredhands.com/fermentaria/beers/ Keep in mind that they're happy to sell you beers in 4 and 8 oz glasses, so you can sample a bunch of them without getting too tipsy. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Great place - went there before for a friend's birthday, real beer geek and he was properly happy with their offerings. Count me in. I'll try to haunt the IRC as well (did the Slack channel ever pick up?) I might have to try some tacos on Monday... I posted something to the Slack channel (#phillyperl on the phillydev slack) but I haven't gotten a response. Which isn't all that surprising, seeing as how I'm the only person on the channel right now. There are only 8 people in total, but who knows, maybe someone will notice it before then.
