We're due for a meeting on Monday. Since I don't believe we have any other volunteers, I'm going to volunteer to do something. This morning I gave a talk to some Mac weenies called "Pimp Your Mac With Perl". It was basically a repackaged version of Mark Fowler's talk which you can find on his excellent website http://www.pimpyourmacwithperl.com/ . But whereas Mark covered about two dozen things in 20 minutes, I talked for an hour on just a few things. I focused on how to use perl to: * write your own services with ThisService * respond to FSevents (the magic used by Spotlight and Time Machine) * send Growl notifications In a rarity for me, I did live demos of all these things. In even more of a rarity, they all worked! Does this sound interesting? The Mac folks seemed to like it, but, you know, they're Mac folks. We'll be meeting tomorrow night, Monday, February 6. I'll be talking about writing OS X glue code in Perl. Details are below. Note that due to the length of today's Puppy Bowl, I have not had time to prepare any material on IO::Kqueue. As usual, we'll be meeting in room 307 Levine Hall, 3333 Walnut St. on Penn's campus. The meeting will run from 7-9 PM. Walt On Sat, Feb 04, 2012 at 06:00:18PM -0500, Walt Mankowski wrote: > Wow, these first Mondays come up awfully quickly, don't they? This one-day event will feature two tracks of speakers. In addition to a track of speakers discussing innovative, exciting, and fun real world usage of Perl, we will have also have a day-long track devoted to Perl instruction, targeting both people who need to update their skills or who have never tried Perl before. There will also be a hackathon room available for people wishing to work on projects in a collaboritive atmosphere with other hackers. The DCBPW team is currently actively seeking talks as well as corporate sponsors for the event. We will be working on a rolling talk acceptance policy, and the number of speaking slots is limited, so we encourage early talk submissions. Registration is $25 before March 1st; $50 thereafter. Free admission is available for students and the currently unemployed.
