Al has given our Web site a much-needed refresh and redesign, and Walt has done the necessary work to put this new site live--and has setup our new mailing list. Thank you both for your hard work in moving things forward! As we said last month, March's meeting will focus on a newbie clinic--the idea is to get people interested in Perl brought up to speed with the current best practices. This includes installing a new, modern version of Perl and going through some of the recent developments in Perl technology (mostly CPAN modules but some core language features as well). I'll be bringing a USB drive with the current Strawberry Perl release, the 5.12.3 tarball, and a miniCPAN. However, we do have a backup plan in case we don't get very many newbies: while Al and Walt did a lot of work on our site, we think we can improve upon it by integrating the calendar, putting together an automailer for upcoming meetings, that sort of thing (and we're open to further ideas along this line, too). I'd also like to plan out further meetings now that things are coming alive again. If you've got any suggestions, please present them here or in person tomorrow. As a reminder, we will be meeting at Levine Hall, 3330 Walnut St., room 307. Please RSVP with me if you plan on attending (and if you're coming as a new perl hacker or not, so we can get some feeling for what we'll be doing). -- Thanks and best regards, Chris Nehren From mjg at phoenixtrap.com Sun Mar 6 23:01:00 2011 From: mjg at phoenixtrap.com (Mark Gardner) Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2011 02:01:00 -0500 Subject: [Philadelphia-pm] New list, new site, meeting reminder In-Reply-To: <20110307011240.42e45722@ubuntu> References: <20110307011240.42e45722@ubuntu> Message-ID: <7EDCCE21-9426-4CD9-9298-C7B32FE488E7@phoenixtrap.com> On Mar 7, 2011, at 1:12 AM, Chris Nehren wrote: > Please RSVP with me if you plan on attending (and if you're coming > as a new perl hacker or not, so we can get some feeling for what we'll > be doing). The dead-line for both of these is June 24th. I am sure you have read a lot about my quest to get Perl Mongers participate on as many tech-events as possible. Giving talks and setting up a booth to talk about Perl. This was very successful a FOSDEM in Brussels with a lot of positive feedbacks. I am sure this can be a good opportunity to reach out to more developers who either have no or have misinformation about Perl. This can also be an opportunity to energize the local Perl users to participate in the Perl Mongers mailing list. So go ahead submit a talk proposal and think about setting up a booth. What would a booth entail? What have previous ones featured? It is usually just a table. You bring some stuff (e.g. print some of the info pages or fliers others prepared). Maybe even some books to sell (e.g. we can arrange a few copies of Modern Perl) You make sure there is always at least one of you at the table which is usually not hard. You grab the people walking near by, give them a card with a few "talking points". e.g. logos of Moose, Catalyst, Dancer, Rakudo, Parrot, Perl 6 etc. sg like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/44203237 at N07/4357954174/in/set-72157623437904012/ They will find something that interests them and you can start talking about that. Worst case they trigger the "When will Perl 6 be released?" question and from there you can go and talk to them about Moose. Or invite them to a Perl 6 talk. In either case Perl wins. You can also give away wooden round tuits and/or you can make pins or stickers for your local PM group.
